unsure I just don't get the whole "Invest in Gold" thing.
I have seen countless ads warning people to invest in gold but I don't understand how anyone is finding security in this. How will people be able to trade gold at a fair price?

I have seen several complaints online about people trying to sell thier gold right now and they don't get anywhere close the market value. G So how is it that a person would get fair value later down the road? Gold buyers rip people off by paying only a fraction of the market value.

personally i do not own any gold. i really don't figure it would be worth that much if shit did get bad and if it is worth that much ur gonna spend all ur resources protecting it. invest in liquor, cigarettes, and weed. be sure and 'rotate' inventory and you will never be without

First time you break out gold to do some bartering you're a marked person… if TSHTF gold would be worthless to anyone without their own private army.

Buying gold bonds will get you your money back, but buying jewelry at retail and selling it at wholesale is not a good investment, period. Buy copper at least. It has electromagnetic properties that make it valuable no matter what and is far cheaper than gold. Plus people aren't getting f*cked turning copper over because they are gullible.

Are there any experts on here as to how to trade the real stuff and not the bonds? Why can't people get fair value right now for the physical gold?

Because it's a scam.

Ok, thats what I want to hear... Buying gold in jewelry form is not valuable if you ever need to resell... 'Thank you

If things got so bad that basic survival is all that matters then gold may not be as barterable as it doesn't have much of any utility value compared to things like tools, food, skills. Seems to be dependant on at least some semblance of a functioning economic system.

Gold and silver should never be purchased with the intention of aiding you during the immediate days and subsequent early stages of any significant SHTF scenario of your preference. They should come after your other preps are well rounded out and be meant as either a long term investment or to be used as an emergency if you need something significant say post-collapse and greenbacks aren't worth dick. So yea, they are dependent on some kind of functioning barter/currency system to utilize - and the day will come after every SHTF scenario no matter how severe where precious metals have value again so long as there are people on this planet.

Regarding the individual above, anything you buy at retail and resell at wholesale is generally a bad investment. Physical gold and silver holdings do make sense as an investment option, you might not view it that way but it's simple fact. If I had invested the extra 50k I ran into mid-1999 in Gold, today I would have been able to turn that into $288,028.68. Would have been a mighty fine investment.

Gold and silver bugs are people who are living in fear and are putting their faith into shiny metal. It's kinda funny and sad at the same time. I just laugh at them as I invest my money in stuff I actually want and find useful in my life.

Who are you to disparage 4000 years of monetary history?

The general human consensus is gold has value. Ergo gold has value.

RE: I just don't get the whole "Invest in Gold" thing.
The main issue with physical metals is that almost all transactions are done thru a middle man (aka dealer). When you buy you pay a minimum of 5% (usually more with silver) above spot price. When you sell you get 5% below spot price. This means you need a double digit increase in price to break even.

However

Often at certain places (gun shows, flea markets) you can buy and sell metals privately. This allows you to exchange them at market value. Problem is this private metals market is tiny and the players are sometimes questionable.

My opinion

Like any investment buy for the long term only with "extra" money. Playing anything for the short term is a bad idea.

RE: I just don't get the whole "Invest in Gold" thing.
This reminds me...

There is an episode in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" where a robot-staffed spaceship keeps their passengers permanently sedated, because they are scheduled to restock more scented moisturized paper tissues on the planet they are on, and are currently experiencing a slight delay. The passengers are thus kept asleep in their chairs, for their own safety and convenience.

Someone enters the ship and questions the wisdom of this. After all, the planet outside is a radioactive wasteland after a horrific nuclear war. Since they obviously aren't going to be restocking paper tissues anytime soon, perhaps they could just forget about the tissues and continue to their destination?

But the robots won't listen.

"Sooner or later, a new Civilization will arise on this planet. And then we will restock our supply of scented moisturized paper tissues and be on our way. Until then, we are experiencing a slight delay."

This story has of course nothing to do with this "Gold vs Mad Max" question, except that sooner or later Civilization will return, and THAT'S when you can sell your gold!

I should help protect against inflation, another form of taxation. It's not a get rich quick thing. It's easier and safer to have gold. It increases in value no matter how bad/good things get. Just because some can't get the price they want doesn't mean it's a sound investment. You can literally trade it in any currency, not just the dollar. Cash for gold and scams like that suck, please beware.
I bought furniture in silver and gold. They weren't to happy about the idea at first but as soon as the salesman was shown them his eyes lit up.

Gold and silver do things to people. I think it's been lusted after for so long, it's in our DNA to want precious metals. Some turnout like the picture below and others just let it sit.
