My girlfriend is a waitress/bartender at a country club. Makes shitloads of cash. It is, however, a job where you have to FOCUS. She quit smoking weed Llbtbqeq when she turned 30 and now she is the boss b*tch waitress there. She said her focus has improved since she quit but she did a good job before--been there for years. This summer she took a sabbatical at a corporate retreat and was in charge of the catering staff as well. No tips there but free room/board plus cash salary and she got to wait on the Prime Minister of Canada. ccflag

Anyway, it is the kind of job where a high school dropout with a good memory and hustle can excel, but it's not for everyone. My fave watering hole is a fast-paced, high hustle environment. The owner is a fair boss but expects a lot. There's not a lot of room for error since, face it, you are easy to replace.

My suggestion is avoid cubicle culture with the ADHD. Too easy to let your mind wander. Get some sort of hustle job where you always keep busy. Bartending sounds like a good fit for you, but maybe more of a low-key place. The difference between my watering hole and the place the girlfriend works at is business flow. She can make more with fewer customers, but has to retain a lot of info (wine lists, remembering regulars, etc). Not as much multi-tasking as a fast-paced sports bar, but good memory skills are a plus. High end restaurants are as a rule more low key.

Hmm...

My memory is shit, I'll admit that, but I can remember things much better then multitasking, if I was to compare.

Maybe I should give bartending another shot? Hell, I'd be lucky to even land a gig with this economy. I was lucky to land the ones I did.

Tons of people with YEARS experience bartending/serving trump a 23 year old kid who's only done it for a year.

When people talk of the freedom of writing, speaking or thinking I cannot choose but laugh. No such thing ever existed. No such thing now exists; but I hope it will exist. But it must be hundreds of years after you and I shall write and speak no more.

At least you can actually do that whole 9-5 desk-thing, though. I'm quite jealous.

It only works if you're a programmer or like a DBA. One of the jobs that mystifies the other people in the office.

And DBAs work late a lot becasue of the maintenance windows ... network guys do the same.

See if you have an aptitude for programming. I've been steadily employed since 1997. Granted, my salary hasn't gone up a lick since then (the golden years lol), but hey, I'm still here.

I can actually see that...it's hard to get distracted when your constantly building and executing lines of code...

Well, I'm good with computers, but know next to nothing about programming. I doubt I could get a job in that area with those per-requisites.

If you want a corporate job in programming, start by making a basic website in notepad ++ from start to finish. Use HTML and javascript to start.

Then get the thin/free version of Visual Studio and make a website in C# and be sure to use the AJAX control toolkit, too. Use the entity data model and LINQ-to-Entity. Then do it all over again in Visual Basic but make a windows application. The problem is you should learn SQL Server, too and you'll have to buy some windows hosting with SQL server to do that unles you can get yourself a copy of SQL Server 2008. In my experience, corporate microsoft.

If you hate microsoft then do the same thing as #2 with netbeans and java and mysql. Make a website and a windows app.

If you did those by yourself well and liked it, you are now a self-taught programmer and could land a junior-level application development job making more than $20/hr. don't worry about the people coming out of college ... just becasue they have a degree in computer science doesn't mean they have an aptitude for programming.

YOu'll be fine, I'm sure this happened for a reason you might not realize yet. Better things are ahead for you.

Say, Camborg80-Trey, speaking of disabilities, could you lose the sig? You might cause someone to go into an epileptic seizure with your very annoying and fast paced sig.

See, I appreciate that, but I don't know what that means.

Better things are ahead? Isn't that just a generic/feel-good thing people tell others? What awaits me, more failing at jobs and being an incompetent idiot?

I'm so excited!

And yeah, I'll probably change my sig later, though it does represent me quite well. ADHD a hoax, my ass. chuckle

Don't be so hard on yourself...Heartflowers

My son is ADHD too...it isn't easy for y'all.

He likes working Temp. Services...where everyday, it's a different place you are sent to..an entire new experience.
People can't get too pissed if you don't know what to do...because your'e only a 'temp'..there for a day or 2.
They generally don't expect you to 'multi task'..

If you haven't given it a try before...might want to think about it...Heartflowers

My friends grandson had adhd. Meds just made him crabby and a zombie. Old fashioned coffee would snap him out of his episodes.

Yeah, it's the same exact thing here.

I can't even drink caffeine - it gets everyone jumpy, it makes me fall asleep.

Sucks being an alien, apparently. chuckle

caffeine contributes to my add it seems. well, too much anyway. depends on how nourished one is. Eventually if done in excess, or habitually it will start to deplete your yin. It already does it's just you do it a lot and everyday and keeping up at night it will definitely deplete your yin/essence.

I work with tons of ADHD kids. There are a lot of meds - what doesn't work for one might work for another. However, you really do need to do a few things first. Take chemicals out of your diet. No FHCS (some weak link to autism and ADHD) and wheat (stronger link to ADHD). Make sure you exercise. You might try certain supplements which help you focus more. I've not known anyone who tried Focus Factor, but you might give it a try (over-the-counter), Gingko, etc. Your main goal is to eat more whole foods, though, and cut out the processed crap. Have you ever had allergy tests? My son gets all goofy when he eats things with yeast (turns out he's allergic to molds) and wheat (surprise - allergic to that, too).

Nah. Google "Hello World". Hello world is a concept ... it's the first program most programmers write and the basis for understanding how a particular language/frame work works. Bery basic, won't take long.

Whatever you are building to learn ... it is what you make it - the more you add to it, the more you learn. If you have a development environment set up, and you see something on the web and think "I wonder how to make that" ... you can figure it out by google.

The best part about programming is on-the-job learning. Employers expect programmers to be able to hit the groung running in terms of knowledge of the technology they are using, but no one is good enough to be able to solve every programming problem right out of the gate. Google is a programmer's friend, and employers totally understand this.

If you can demonstrate by something you built that you know what you are doing and have the skills they require, you're in.

If you didn't major in it and have no experience, a corporate employer would still expect you to be able to produce documentation for your software. Google that too.

Good luck if you want to take this route and let me (saltwatertaffy) know if you have any questions. I love helping people learn programming/software development. Soon, I'll probably become an instructor so there's an open job right there :-)

Watch the heavens, watch the sky, watch as the days go passing by. "It" will come this I know because a watcher told me so. Now I know what I must do for I have become a watcher too. When you know the end is near, watch and wait for "it" to appear. The watchers know things not of this world. They have been watching man since they were put on this earth. Watch "it's" coming, will be here soon. Now you've been told the watchers are here, watch and wait because this all you can do unless you become a watcher to.

Remember the watchers are watching you!!!

Apply to be a watcher. it is what I did and it has changed my life. all you do is sit and watch and get paid big bucks to do it.

They do ask for some other stuff in return but it will not be much at first.

A. Watcher
