People follow other people. Friends like the same music because they want to be part of something. The only people that I knew that liked Zappa were also doing acid. His music sucked and his lyrics were a bunch of shit that said nothing of any consequence. But because mom and dad hated it, the kids automatically liked it. Zappa never had that "hit-making" or "popular" touch

But he WAS a musical genius, have NO doubt.

I fully understand those who do not "get" Zappa.

Proof? Look at the musicians that gravitated to Frank over the years. They were ALL gifted and drawn to jam with Frank and the Mothers.

McGowan's Laurel Canyon series raises some interesting questions about Zappa. For one, he apparently never did drugs and mocked any who did. So he was a straight pretending to be hip.

He also held his audience in contempt. That's not from McGowan, my personal observation.

Musical genius? Hardly. He is not presently remembered for a single composition (or even a single worthwhile riff) and won't be in the future.

Well, yeah, I wouldn't argue, but ... he's goin' along, playing truly beautiful music, and then - "ram it, ram it, ram it up your poop chute", and back to the music.

He'd do that. Great music, then he'd just shit all over it.

I thought that childish, and still do.

But much of his music was fine, when he'd make the effort, and leave out the inane babbling.
