In other words, OP, you are missing a government. That's difficult for me to relate to, having never had any happy or pleasant experiences with government. Anywhere. All I would ask of a government is that they leave me alone to live my own life as long as I'm not hurting anyone else. But that seems to be too much to ask of governments.

Very hard for me to imagine wishing for a government that told you where you would go to school, what you would study, where you would work, how much you would be paid, where you would live, where you could travel. I think we must want different things from life, you and I. I would never trade personal freedom for security.

All I would need to know about a country is that one had to have the government's permission to leave to know that I would never want to live there.

As for the gulags, Guantanamo is not a valid comparison. The US has a much larger prison population than the USSR ever did. The States have been selling the prisons off to private corporations, and guaranteeing the corporations a good income from keeping the citizens in prison. They tax the people who are not in prison, in order to pay the corporations to keep other citizens in prison. The corporate prison owners then sell the labor of the prisoners to other corporations for very low prices. That's not the sort of country I would want to live in either.
