You shouldn't start a forum if you don't already have an area of interest you are passionate about. Without passion for an area of interest, you'll get bored and will let your forum die.

You'll join the ranks of those who did, and died. Getting people to your forum isn't easy, especially when the postings are infrequent and the board is mostly dead. I've seen guys pour hours into culling information and posting it, trying to provide content, but how would anyone know to go there? "Build it and they will come" was just a line from a movie. Forums are built upon either luck, or internal splits with other forums.

I currently run a forum, have been admin for a couple of other ones as well. The forum I now run is just the remnants of a much larger one that split apart over 5 years ago. I've seen the different reiterations of it until the remaining members and I were the only ones left --and that was only after it had been closed nearly a year and I decided to see if there was a desire on anyone else's part for it to be reopened.
