RE: I was asked by a city official if I was willing to run a tent city
Wow - a tent city - and you get to run it? Really?

PERFECT!! Is this what you have trained for all your life?

Just how do you run a tent city ?

I dont understand- tent cities are a detriment to communities,

Why not figure out a way to fund and run a facility that gets people back on their feet and into jobs and housing?

Tent cities are inviting trouble and don't solve real issues.
Just exactly what city official would ask this - and what city?
and WHY YOU?

You left out a lot of info - maybe this is a bait thread?

Nobody is going to be forced to live in the tent city. It will be voluntary, and will be a safe place for them to come and get back on their feet
ahhhh, but the real work is done getting them to the point where they will volunteer to go. Yes, the same failed policies they tried putting blacks on welfare and in housing projects ( so they could profit off of them too) and making their lives so desperate they'd Voluntarily go back into Slavery.
liberal fail

You just don't get it. Its not about liberal or conservative. Its not about forced labor, or Fences around the TC. It is about giving people a hand up, not a hand out.

Your statement makes you sound like what is wrong with the world today

Same arguments, same justification. Nothing changes except the dupes and players faces.

it would be pretty lame bait.

whats worse...homeless on the street corner with no safe place to go to get a meal and access to services, or a tent city where they have all of that, and don't have to beg for your spare change?

RE: I was asked by a city official if I was willing to run a tent city
Also, I am not using the name of the city as this has only come to me through one city official, and I am not 100% sure if it will be a city program or if it is that persons personal project. If it is his personal project, I don't want to get him any trouble with the city.

Also, I have already said why me. I lived in Occupy "camps" for 5+ months and 1 of them for over 4 months. I was not THE leader, but like several other people, I was considered A leader. The official and I worked together to get services for the homeless who had moved into the park.

Trash is going to be an issue, rather a way to get rid of it. I hope a trash company will donate a small dumpster. There will be many beer, wine and liquor bottles - don't forget ash trays (like empty coffee cans), and the always present litter bugs who just drop their trash on the ground. You may need a designated person to do just that one job alone.

On another note, how about charging stations for their 'bama phones, free wifi for their laptops (job searches, unemployment benefits, etc.).

Open a little store (in a small trailer maybe) where you can accept food stamps for food with the profit going to those things that are not free or donated.

Just a thought -------

I dont know where your building it, but if i was building a tent city id make sure to try to put it in an area with lots of land around to grow your own food. That way you'd be less dependent on the $$$

teaching them to survive would be awesome
even under the guise of saving them money when they get back on their feet

teach them to grow food in small areas
community gardens
canning
etc.

as the community for donations of seeds, plants, canning equipment, etc.
maybe even some chickens if some want to do it

turn from tent city to self sufficient collective

:)

I am pretty exited about this opportunity, as in my local area, we are seeing more and more homeless families showing up on the streets.

Its also nice to see a city official actually give a shit about the issue, and not just make useless gestures, like donating a loaf of bread to the shelter.

This actually makes me so sad!!! It's going to get worse for many people.

Wow, very helpful tips and clearly you have a lot of compassion for the homeless.

if you have compassion for the homeless- you would NOT put them in tent cities

get a grant and build facilities - like the CITY OF HOPE in SAN ANTONIO

RE: I was asked by a city official if I was willing to run a tent city
I would advise caution working with a city official, elected or not.

All it takes is a newly elected city council to change anything put into place.

It has happened personally to me.

A city official asked me to establish a service for the homeless. I did. I was funded for 10 years. A new city council allowed the plug to be pulled.

Now we beg the community to keep our doors open to the homeless.

DO NOT make any commitment to start this unless you have a legal and binding contract!

do a little research and make sure you are not being used as a dry run for a FEMA camp set up...

Tent cities have been around for a long time. This is nothing new. The difference is its the first time this city has shown any interest in doing anything other than arresting the homeless
