No doubt. He's really underestimating the depth of the water. They showed a picture of breakway levee, the water goes to the tops of the utility poles, at least 18-20ft of water.
if that breaks... not looking good with the amounts already down. Saw them say could sit here for next 36 hours

From what he said, the breakway levee has been breeched. It is not part of the Federal levee system which starts shortly after it, that part, a 20ft wall, is holding.

Braithwaite, not breakaway. That's the levee in Braithwaite, a small town in Plaquemines Parish, population 500 to 1000. They were under mandatory evacuation; I hope no one is in all that water.

I just checked the Braithwaite census 2012 - and the population is 1,965. Hope they are safe but its doubtful. Some frantic guy was saying that Braithwaite is gone....totally flooded you cant even see the roofs. Emergency people are trying to help....NOPE police stopped them! too dangerous

I'm in Metairie near the 17th St Canal. I still have power, amazingly. For a while during the early morning I thought the pine trees across the street were going to become projectiles right through my wall, and I slept in the bathroom just in case. Crazy wee hours thoughts and reactions.

snip:
"From 10 to 20 inches of rain may fall on part of the north-central Gulf Coast beginning late this week and continuing into next week, and could in itself result in disastrous flooding," warned AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
Schleifstein explained that New Orleans' internal drainage system can only handle 10-year rain events. "The pump system handles an inch of rain per hour for the first few hours. After that, all bets are off," he said.
"There is potential for some places to get rainfall rates of an inch per hour or more for a prolonged period," Sosnowski stated.
If the pumps are overwhelmed, that could have an effect on the levees.

I believe the Army Colonel that Cantore interviewed said the pumps could handle an inch for the first hour and then a half inch per hour. Not a whole lot of water being pumped out at that rate.

If society fell apart, we - the people would build a new one. Most people are good at their core, and when we see things that are wrong we work to fix them together. Make friends with your neighbors, get involved with your community - because we will rebuild our lives, our communities, from horrible circumstances we always will.
