The government of Iceland has forgiven the mortgage debt for much of its population. This nation chose a very different way of stopping the crisis from the rest of European countries. Iceland only has 14 citizens so the problem was alot smaller. As for the banks they owed money to foriegn nations so that wasn't such a big deal either.

Iceland forgave them but did the banks? Does this now mean that the government of Iceland now owns their homes? If so, f*ck that. I'd rather pay my own mortgage

We could have done that here.

The bailout money could have been used to pay off ALL THE MORTGAGES in the nation, and it still would have gone to the banks.

Instead, they just gave it to the banks and skipped the mortgages.

Stupid way of doing things, EITHER WAY, but we could have done that and got twice the bang for the buck, and a COMPLETE RECOVERY.

Because think of all the cash people would have had to buy things with no mortgage!

I agree, and It would have given people some money to spend to keep the economy afloat.

There is no money and nobody owes it to anyone. There are only numbers in computers. You can safely erase all these numbers and the world will not end!

i have mentioned the state of iceland on a thread before; the way iceland handled the debt that they suffered at the hands of international banker who burnt a shit load of foreign investment was to kick them out of the country and the say f*ck you to the international monetary system (for the most part).

Thats why the IMF stopped using it as its poster child country of 'success' post 2008. The IMFs solution to the debt burden left was to have the population of iceland pick up the debt and pay back, like a mortgage.

They got a new gov and refused to pay back the international investment, as it was the fault of the bankers.

All countries in europe should do that, as we all know the major players/criminals, are relatively few and far between. But that won't happen.

I am glad iceland did tho, they set some kind of precendence.

Imagine not having to pay back your mortgage.. that would be amazing.
