If you want a garden, you have to work ....
Guys, WEED YOUR GARDEN ! I have had neighbors stop and say "gee, your garden looks so good but I can't get anything to grow - can you come look at it?"
Almost every time the supposed garden was over run with weeds and when I pointed this out I got almost the same response "you mean I have to pull all of those weeds ?"

keep in mind, the farmers opponent are :
1. Weather
2. Weeds
3. Insects

The weather you can't do a whole lot about, the weeds, well if you keep your garden weeded, you will eliminate about 90% of your insect problem.

Here is a tip: Put several of those solar powered garden lights in your garden. They will attract bugs at night, which in turn attracts good predators like spiders, lizards, preying mantis ect .... that will hang out in the garden for a good meal.

that is a good idea about the solar lights, never thought of that. i tend to mulch my garden as thick as i can and add more as the plants grow, keeps weeding to a minimum and conserves water.
like my dad always used to say, you don't weed the whole garden in one day, just do a row a day and do it everyday. using a shuffle hoe makes quick work of it.
going to help my brother plant his garden next weekend, between two creeks and beautiful black loamy soil with a good amount of clay, really rich soil. deer are going to be a problem though, although we have had luck in the past with scents.

good to see you're still using those green thumbs of yours!

Jptdknpa I don't partake of the herb but if that's your crop of choice, more power to ya Heartflowers You still need to weed it to help it thrive though.

Also, weeding "shakes up" the plants and lets pollen flow and pollen gives you a crop !

My lazy neighbor let his whole yard get taken over by weeds and then the fuzzy seeds blew my way. Almost looked like he was growing cotton. He finally whacked most of them down, but the damage is done. I'm pretty good at weed picking as I prefer not to use Monsanto chemicals.

My neighbors are good people but have no clue about gardening. They will spend a small fortune on plants, put them in the ground but won't water them.
I have 2 nice plum trees and 2 nice peach trees and they always say "we can't get anything to grow" and I tell them that they have to keep stuff watered - in one ear and out the other !

Also, I have a riding mower with a bagger on it. I use it for the first 4-5 mowings of the season to collect all of the weed seeds. That seems to work pretty good keeping weeds down.

Light till, remove rootballs and mulch is a good strategy for keeping weeds down for the most part, also keeps moisture from evaporating away quickly and protects against UV damage to the topsoil.

A certain amount of volunteer weeds can help with the insect problem as well, as many insects will prefer a diet of native plants over your domesticated vegetables.

Those dandelion greens are edible, you know, and delicious. If theyre a problem, just get a couple of bunnies in a rabbit tractor and they'd be more than happy to take care of them for you. you wouldnt even have to buy rabbit food until theyre all gone. You could reseed and choke them out or just till the area and garden there after the bunnies have revitalized it with their poop.

Crab grass, rototillers best friend.

Where you reckon one begins to pull at that pesky plant?

Trying a newspaper and straw bed this year to block its growth, but just seen some pesky little bugs been nipping at my green beans.

Gardens, oh bother....
