RE: Im serious thinking about buying a spider
Yeah - I shooh'ed them outta the yard, gently with a rake when I lived in so cal.
Do me a favor - research taratula hairs being ejected into someone's eye. A person - accidently scared her pet and it spit hairs out. Landed in her eye.
Probably a rare event.

RE: Im serious thinking about buying a spider
Tarantulas, while looking like the scariest of arachnids, are actually one of the most gentle. They actually make good pets, and will not bite a human under normal handling conditions. In fact, unless they're hunting, or if their lives are in danger (as in something's trying to pull a leg off or something), they don't bite at all.
The spiders you gotta worry about are the black widows and brown recluses. Those will kill you.

Those critters are cool. I love to see those legs in motion. Ours aren't huge, but they're interesting. Stinky, though.

LoP Guest Wrote:I was digging in the garden one day and found an egg sized silk cocoon. I had no idea what it was so I ripped it open to find the largest, ugliest, black trap door spider a person has ever seen. I jumped about two feet in the air and let out a blood curdling scream- dropping the spider and cocoon. There's a lesson in that... if you don't know what it is- leave it alone.
When I lived in the jungle, I encountered one of these, and it was the size of my hand. I screamed, and it ran so fast it was like lightning. I saw it again several times as it was living in a storage shed where we were camping. I still get the heebie jeebies!

You really shouldn't get a non-domesticated animal for a passing personal fascination (or any animal). I see this all the time...people want a husky puppy because they're "cute" then they grow up and become a problem for the owner because the owner is a f*cking moron and doesn't understand that not all "domestic" animals are domesticated.
Spiders like the tarantula are wild animals. By keeping one (basically) trapped in a fixed habitat and not allowing it to act in it's natural state is basically animal abuse.

No...they won't (unless you're a child or the venom is semi-untreated).

RE: Im serious thinking about buying a spider
I can't stand spiders. I did hold one of those tarantulas one time at the bug zoo, it was kind of cute, but still scared the shit out of me. I can't see how that would make a very fun pet. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

Yeah for spiders!
I say 'go for it' Fried Rice!
I had a female Black Widow for a while..until it was her time to cross over. She was an awesome friend to have around.
I was very careful when feeding and watering her...because I respected her abilities.
I loved to watch her sitting in her nearly invisible web...how she would take her prey, drink from the tiny water drops misted on her web.
They can be really cool friends to have around, very interesting to watch..just always have the respect there, and shouldn't be any problems.
To the person that said a Brown Recluse bite will kill ya...I have never heard of a death..people lose some flesh sometimes, but I've never heard of anyone dying.
If it were the case...I would have been dead over 12 years ago...LOL
I was bitten by 1 on my forearm...and I survived, with no medical attention, and I didn't lose any flesh.
Personally, I think the Medical Community makes things worse.
I used my bodies own defense system to heal the bite...and I don't even have a scar.
I was sicker than a dog for over a month ..but at least I didn't end up with a huge chunk of missing forearm!....or DEAD!
on an aside....I miss Oros too!...
Was wondering the other day where he'd been, haven't seen him around in a month or more....
Hope y'all are right, and he's found him a Lady friend...sure is a nice guy, he deserves it!

I am not quite so enamoured with black widows since I frequently run into them in the most inconvenient places but they are fascinating and potent creatures, seen here with a tomato worm.
