Mining Helium-3 will Transform Dark Side of the Moon
Russia, India, China, Caterpillar, Google, and Virgin race for the Moon to mine helium-3--an isotope that can transform our energy future through nuclear fusion

Sure, if we ever get fusion reactors working and efficient. I've been hearing
that's just around the corner for several decades now. It never seems to be
quite there yet.

Thorium reactors look more realistic for future energy needs right now.
Cheaper and safer than normal reactors are today.

What would be the point?
Helium-3 mining

Oh, ok, thanks for the info. We still don't actually know how to create fusion yet though, do we?

I see too there is a lot more valuable plunder on the moon ("titanium, platinum, silicon, ammonia, mercury"). It's all nonsense. Too expensive, won't happen. We only have one home, we should make the best of that.

The simplest answer is most likely the correct one

But that runs counter to our human desire to explore and branch out. Should
a good sized asteroid make for a bad day on Earth that could be the end of
our species. Why not learn how to live on the other planets we have nearby
and even use the Moon as a stepping stone to get there? On this planet we
have all our eggs in just one basket and there are rocks flying around all over
the place.

Which is why I posted it, and I agree on Thorium.

We are destructive, selfish and arrogant animals Dr P.

Animals with clever brains and fervent imaginations.

We have not looked after what we have.

Our pursuit always boils down to money and power. The provision is secondary.

Exploration may seem like a romantic notion but the next stage is always exploitation.

If we looked after and respected our only living space I would say yes, go for it. But we don't. We shit where we eat and then look further afield for more.

The simplest answer is most likely the correct one

Well, I think we've manage to grow out of our selfishness and greed at least
a little. People never gave a thought to the environment at all only 60 years
ago. In the whole of human history very little care has been given to the
health of this planet. That, at least, has changed a little. I just hope we as
a species survive long enough to see it change a lot.

I thought you had a better context than that Dr P.

Sentimentality and optimism are anathema to me. Facts, patterns and momentum are what count.

I don't blame you, but I have something I simply cannot let go of: Hope.

To just go back and say we did that, then no, to go back and maybe explore the mining possibilities, then yes.

Hope that there will not be any payback for everything we do, for the domination we claim, for the ownership we place on everything, for the lack of awareness we have shown throughout our bloody brutal history. Pffft to hope, karma is king.

Karmic realignment is not a mechanism of punishment but of instruction.
It implies an instructer.
And hope.

CENSORED (by popular demand).

I believe in reciprocity. But if I got everything I deserve I'd probably
be dead by now. No one is perfect. I have to keep my hope alive.
