Geologists are releasing their findings from the massive undersea earthquake and warning that the eastern coastal regions of Japan are in danger of falling into the trench created in the sea floor.

Quote:After the earthquake it was hard to collect GPS data points. The results during an earthquake in the east-southeast direction showed moving about 5.3m for Oshika Peninsula, about 1.2m found that there was a new settlement . Moreover, the continued gradual deformation after an earthquake was in wide range around the focal area, after a change from large earthquakes it was greater than 20 cm.

The areas closest to the epicenter of the quake jumped a full 4 meters (13 feet) closer to the United States, geophysicist Ross Stein at the United States Geological Survey told The New York Times. As Japan’s eastern coastline sunk, the tsunami’s waves rolled in.

Special attention should be paid to the tide level around spring tides (until the end of April);
from 18 to 26 March, 2011
from 1 to 11 April, 2011
from 16 to 24 April, 2011

We will keep you inform about situation in Japan with new data. Preliminary indicators are showing that Japan is sinking. We hope that we are wrong!

Also saw a rumor on the site-that-must-not-be-named that Hawaii's Civil Defense teams have been put on alert for a tsumani that could be generated from this slippage in the very near future.

Being nervous is not nearly as effective as being aware.

Releasing solid information about the on-going effects of this massive land movement is just responsible, not fear mongering.

Quote:The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake largely sank the ground level of the Pacific coast of Tohoku region and northern part of Kanto region. The risk of the submergence and flood in these regions has become larger than before the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake.

Therefore, it is necessary to pay special attention to the tide level and to prepare for the submergence and flood in these regions, especially during the spring tide, when the flood tide level becomes higher than usual.

Burst water mains are part of the problem, but liquefacation is what caused those cars to sink into the parking lot. The main problem is experienced in areas of "reclaimed" land that have no bedrock foundation.

RE: Is Japan Sinking?
Article in The Japan Times from Saturday, April 24, 2010 explains how much of Japan is reclaimed land...

Quote:How you reclaim land here: Just say, it's mine!

By AMY CHAVEZ
If you think Japan is small, imagine how small it used to be. You may not be aware of this, but Japan is a lot bigger than it used to be, thanks to a phenomenon called landmass growth.

This geological process, more accurately described as a mutation, has been accomplished over hundreds of years of reclaiming land.

And every time land is reclaimed from the sea, various techniques are employed to reinforce the new structures. Stone walls, cement tetrapods, sea walls and other barriers are used to keep the unruly land intact. Reclaiming is all about controlling spaces and reforming them to fit your needs.

Now that sea levels are rising, it seems that the sea, and the fish, are attempting to reclaim what was rightfully theirs.

The fear of rising seas has prompted construction of even more sea walls on our island. Despite this being against the wishes of the locals, we are told we need the sea walls to protect us from the sea.

At least, that's what they claim.
