RE: "Is it illegal not to carry ID?" NO
But ALL law-abiding citizens should ALWAYS carry legal ID with them at ALL times and present it to any peace officer upon request as is their civic duty to assist in keeping the peace and protecting us from criminals and terrorists!

After all, if you're innocent, you have nothing to fear!

D.D. July 5 1976 - January 23 2014. Thank you for being in our lives. You are deeply missed.

Here "in" Canada I have asked a couple of RCMP officers if there is a law requiring me to have such a thing?

Best I get from them is that there is a requirement to produce ID wen it is requested of you by an officer. I was not cited any actual law, and I was not flat out told that there is a law that they could site that required me to have such a thing. Confused? It would seem that by there account (one where in which no law was quoted to me) that if you engage wit a public official then you require one but not until then.....?

What I understand is that when I am out on the land, on Gods creation then I travel on "my way" in my private capacity which is not up for public scrutiny, If I ID myself as being in public and on a a public road / right of way then I need one.

If you are on the way to work or engaged in any activity that the government is a party to then it seems they desire you have one for your PERSON.

A person and a man are not one in the same. They want your personal information and not your private information.

Since I am not engaged in a criminal life style I feel inclined to not balk a such things it is only when in my private jurisdiction that the public tries to traverse into that I think it imperative to make it clear I reserve all my rights including the right to travel freely with out hinderence or let.

You may legally go about without ID, unless you are required to produce it to identify yourself to a police officer. That is to say, it is not an offense to not have ID on you, but it is an offense to be unable to identify yourself if required. To put it another way, it is only an offense to have no ID if you are asked for it by a police person.

This is not accurate. You are not required to privide identification unless you are being arrested. Inevitably they will say Im conducting an investigation, why would you help someone who is trying to charge you with a crime without any reasonable articuable suspicion, If you refuse and they arrest you, then you know they have the proof they need to arrest you, if they just keep harrassing you they do not have the proof they need, do not speak to them and give it to them. NEVER SPEAK TO THE POLICE!!!EVER!!!
Twice in the last year a LEO has approached me and said excuse me sir may I talk to you. Both times I suspect they got a "man with a gun" call when another citizen saw my legally carried firearm and complained. Both times I just kept walking. Nothing was done either time.
Are you in Canada?

RE: "Is it illegal not to carry ID?" NO
I got into it with cops on 3 occasions where I was doing nothing but they demanded to see my ID.

One time I was sleeping in my truck cuz I was on a long road trip. Shined their spot lights in on me and demanded my id...

Another time I was pulled over on the side of the road talking on my cell and they demanded my ID - no insurance though.

Another time I was on my damn bicycle going through a college campus and they demanded my ID. I had been drinking and told them they had no right to identify me, then they threatened me with bullshit like "recklessness or drunk in public" if I didn't submit.

If I'm ever sober again, I will raise hell with them.

I seem to recall a case that went to the appellate courts and/or the Supreme Court where the issue was whether a person is required to provide their name to an LEO when requested. I'm sorry I can't recall the outcome or the state, but I know there is a significant case out there that addressed this issue. I can't recall if the individual was being placed under arrest or was just being questioned. I think it was the latter, and then he was arrested/charged in part for failing to comply with the LEO's request.

I think its koher VS L___??? A mentally ill homeless person california.... There was no definition of "proper ID" The vagrency law was to "vague" I will try to find it again and post the link !!! "credible and reliable id" was not defined g00gling the terms, be back

Some states used to have vagrancy laws, by which if you had no ID and no money, you could be arrested and fined. I don't know if those laws still exist. Here is a linky for this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vagrancy_(people)
Indeed. Tis why, amongst hobo folk, the smarter of 'em know to carry a fiver just in case. $5 being the minimum the LEO-types expect as proof of non-vagrancy. I heard this somewhere recently, this specific dollar amount. Look it up if you don't believe me. The only trick then is to keep your dirty filthy no good thievin' bum friends' hands off your Lincoln.

And no, I'm not giving the OP's wallet back. Your fin's mine, batch, and your ass will soon belong to Larry - the large, monosyllabic ape-like creature that you'll be sharin' a cell with, you unidentified mendicant hosebag.

RE: "Is it illegal not to carry ID?" NO
Officer Bevier testified that a seat belt violation was a civil infraction and a person can't be arrested and jailed for a civil infraction under Michigan law. He also testified that under the law, there is no requirement that a passenger in a car carry identification. (Joint Appendix at 93-94)</p>

Defendant asserts there were grounds for arrest because plaintiff admitted he cussed at Officer Metiva and was unable to produce any identification. Plaintiff stated he may have uttered "a few cuss words," but also stated that Metiva called him Spud, roughed him up, tore the shirt off his back, and maced him for no valid reason. In light of these alleged circumstances, plaintiff's behavior would not provide grounds for probable cause to arrest. >>>>>There is absolutely nothing wrong in plaintiff's inability to produce identification as the passenger of a car is not required to carry identification. Although M.C.L. Sec. 750.103 states that "any person ... who shall profanely curse or damn or swear by the name of God, Jesus Christ or the Holy Ghost, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor," the police did not allege that plaintiff cursed or swore in the name of God, but instead said he used Bad words or something

Talk about a rush, the looks on their faces, and the feeling of adrenaline you get as your walking away is sweet.

I'd really like to believe you.
Where do you live?
Would not work in SO. Cakalaky.
-you'd get jacked up.

Central PA. You run the risk of getting jacked up, that is why its important to carry a voice recorder. Locally 5 cops just got fired for excessive force, an ongoing case where 6 police cars rolled up beat the crap outta a kid and mysteriously all the dash cam tapes dissapeared. So I dont live in a lax town. Its all in how you carry yourself. I normally Open carry a firearm. Police know not to tackle or jack me up for a bullshit reason, since I would be able to defend myself legally if their reason for stopping me is false.
Go to any Open carry website and see all the stories of guys talking their way into trouble. and many like me who just walk away or stand in silence refusing to be disarmed without cause. Im not unique.

Terry vs Ohio, without reasonable articuable suspicion (meaning they have to be able to tell you what your suspected of and why) you are not required to stop or speak to any officer.
The SCOTUS has basically enforced this as law every time.
