Is it the end of the U.S. as we know it?
Is the era of Pax Americana passing? For more than half a century the United States has been the “indispensable nation,” the world’s singular state that by dint of economic and military might has been the most crucial player on the geopolitical stage.

However, there are those who now say the sun is setting on the American empire, that a new world order is taking shape and the U.S. will soon be merely one power among many. Indeed, according to some scholars and commentators, the U.S. increasingly looks like end-of-empire Britain as China becomes the world’s biggest creditor and challenges America in terms of economic and military power.

“The U.S. has suffered major military defeats; its debt is piling up; not only China but other powers are clearly rising,” writes Norwegian historian Geir Lundestad. Adds Australian political scientist Geoffrey Garrett: “The scale and ambition of American foreign policy will almost inevitably be smaller in the next 10 years that in the past 10.”

Even Canada’s prime minister, Stephen Harper, a great admirer of the U.S., appears convinced America is on the downward slope. “The world is becoming more complex, and the ability of our allies, and most importantly the United States, to single-handedly shape outcomes and protect our interests, has been diminishing,” he told Maclean’s magazine last year.

Americans, too, seem to be buying the declinist thesis. A recent survey of Harvard Business School graduates found that 66 per cent expected the U.S. to lose ground to China, Brazil and India. “Is America Over?” the editors of Foreign Affairs, the organ of the American power elite, asked in a recent issue. The U.S. National Intelligence Council has concluded that by 2023 American dominance “will be much diminished” even though the U.S. “will remain the pre-eminent power.” Peter Kiernan, a former partner at Goldman Sachs, argues that the U.S. is, as he provocatively puts in a book title, Becoming China’s b*tch.

But is the United States really a declining power? More crucially, if this is the new geopolitical reality, should we regard the end of Pax Americana with equanimity or trepidation?

RE: Is it the end of the U.S. as we know it?
I think the answer is yes, nothing lasts forever. All empires rise, rule and then fall. Having said that, its interesting times we live in, I wonder how the U.S will end, with a wimper and or bang. So far looks like a wimper.

Another note, its funny how usually empires collapse from the inside and not from some outside force.

old article, great read on possible causes of the American failure.
