I was merely giving the OP a little something to research, talk to his gun shop Pros about, and maybe reconsider as a ONE and only purchase for a rifle right now. If he was hunting, I am thinking he would have been looking at less expensive .270's.
Apologies. I'd shudder to send a young man down the .270 path, no matter what St.Jack used to say ;-). Up here, a .270 is an old man's gun, for those that had to hang up their 760 .30-'06s because they were too hard on the shoulder, and they got good enough to take moose with the lesser gun.
247mph Wrote:I'm quite familiar with Quantico's range, guess who took me there and showed me some "tips" before he contracted M.S. (yes, I am OLD)? You think everyone here is a dumbass run of the mill moron, don't you? Do you think I speak from a "Guns and Ammo" advertiser influenced biased article opinion?
Well, a lot of them, yes. The whole ".30-'06 runs circles around a .308" thing had me thinking you were a G&A gent, yessir. And since you are in the game, you do know that they went back and forth over the years over who made more 10xs at the big matches... same round, for all intents and purposes, like Fogeyheit and Celsius ;-). The big thing up here that separates them is that conventional wisdom is you don't poke a moose with a .308 throwing heavier than 180s, and in a .30-'06 you can go up to 220s.
247mph Wrote:I gave him/OP my recommendation for a reason. AND, it wasn't for shooting at PEOPLE, I like targets personally...paper ones, at 1000 yards. I doubt you even have the property to shoot EVERY single day of the year if you feel like it, at 1000 yards (I do and then some).
Nah, again, 200yds flat in the front yard, but the rest is too hilly to stretch much past 4. Hills get in the way.
247mph Wrote:I didn't mean to insult you (I did mean to for Richard and whoever suggested someone chamber a Rem 700 in .50BMG...lol) so I hope no hard feelings.
Pshaw, worry not. But really, a Remmy in .50... is that so far from the Big Mac? Reloading it would cost a fortune, though...
247mph Wrote:Since he can't defend himself nor me, I will not mention Carlos anymore in here (You do know he didn't like what he did...and cringed politely inside when people called him "Gunny" later in his life, right?).
I did not know Mr.Hathcock, but by the same token, would never have called him Gunny to his face anyway. I am not a Marine. I only knew him by his written works. What a man regrets to himself, I feel, is the man's business.
I'm glad we seem to be understanding of each other. I hope the OP reads this again and decides "whatever", lol. These rounds; even the strange and obsolete, are still around for a good reason...some people favor them over others. I think we can kindly agree to disagree on many issues, but for some reason I also think we could have a ton of fun "reloading" and shooting those rounds (however different) anywhere, and become/remain friends. To be honest...I think .22 rounds are still my favorite, I am serious...lol. Good for 200+ yards easy, sometimes 250 when the wind is non-existant. You stay safe where-ever you are, and watch your "background" with the heavy stuff. By the way...I DO believe .308 DOES have it's place, just mentioning it for the record.
(Carlos even cringed when range masters at Quantico said it to him....they WERE Marines and Feds.)

Absolutely. But I think, for the record, we have to decide which is "strange" and which is "obsolete"... nah, just kidding. We both, in our hearts, know the answer ;-).

I hear you about the .22. That round is absolute magic, and has put more food in more pots than probably all others combined...
And I hear ya about the downrange. Always always...

RE: Just got a Remington 700 ADL
Thanks for the advice.
I decided to get this rifle because it was the best I could get for my price range. It comes with a bushnell scope and it has a synthetic stock. I decided to go .308 because it can drop anything I may have to, good for any range i will be possibly firing from, decent price on ammo and ammo availability and can use 7.62 x 51
And grats on the 30-30 marlin purchase, whoever that was.
I get to pick it up in about a week. I haven't even seen it yet and it was a display model at another store... so hopefully it isn't too molested. I am sure it is fine. But I haven't paid for it completely yet, just 30% layaway. I can transfer that to another firearm if I don't like the condition... but we will see, like I said, I am sure it is fine. I will just check the crowning, rifling, action, bolt face, trigger.. any other suggestions to check?
My 10/22 was a display model too but that was in a small shop. This is a big chain.
My Remington 870 was alive 13 years before me and used by police so it wasn't so pretty, not much to inspect. But it was reparkerized, so it wasn't that bad, it was the furniture more than anything. I got some synthetic furniture now it looks brand new

I was on the edge of Pay-Pal sending you the money to cover the .300 Win Mag upgrade, you should have stopped typing sooner. Sort of just kidding...what you found should serve you well, but in the end you will lose the .300 option as it is a "short-action", not a "long action" 700, hence not able to re-barrel and chamber for .300. It will be FINE, I'm sorry I said what I did. Hey, later on if you want, just aquire a long-700 action and build a "bean-field" 1000+ yarder from there. Be careful with whatever you get, shoot at stuff like your own MOM is down-range from/through whatever you are firing at (that should keep others past your targets safe).

If you want to score points, bring a snap-cap to test the firing pin and trigger break. It's polite. Modern firearms don't really need them, but it's like covering your hand with a sleeve before examining a nice blade; it's the niceties that make us a civil society ;-).
And if you want to get really particular, bring a couple of snap caps, and try cycling the action... other than that, flashlight maybe to check the bore, check the sling swivels to see if they're loose... And if it's a nice scope, say a 3200 or such, maybe work it a bit. If it's just a normal Bushnell, make sure the wires are both there ;-).

And of course, Mi'kmaq blood because, well, Acadian winters are cold and Mi'kmaq, when not out scalping Brits for the bounty the French paid for those louse-ridden mops, were amenable ;-).
Shut it, you're just a Brit or worse a Frog.

Congrats... See if you have an adjustable trigger on your rifle.. Have a qualified person make some adjustments for you if needed...Some Remington 700's have these on them.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lrf3cCij8Ys...
