Just finished "Survivors" by James Wesley Rawles
Not as technical as Patriots so it was an easier read. He tied two of the characters from Patriots into this story.

Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, a book that needs to be gotten through slowly. The prose is outstanding; modern books cannot compare to the beautiful, compact language of the past.

Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything I like Bryson; I highly recommend his Mother Tongue as well.

A new compilatation of Robert E. howard's Conan stories, which are fantastic! Fantasy fans and lovers of good prose alike owe it to themselves to check out a master of the genre. Seriously. You can pick them up for a song on Amazon. Did you know Howard and Lovecraft were pals? I didn't. You will not be disappointed by these stories!

Also, started a book called The Ultimate Evil which is about the Son of Sam/Process Church. I bought that after hearing Lovapotamus recommend it on another thread. I have always been fascinated by the Manson cult, and apparently this is another strand in the web of Bad Krazy that seems to have blanketed Southern California in the 60's.

Re-reading King Rat between classes; it's slim and fits in my backpack without taking up much room. Has anyone here read James Clavelle's Shogun? Goddamn that's a good book!

I swore I would never read another King novel after the pus filled abortion that was the final Dark Tower[i] novel. It started out so well! Truly fine writing! But the ending was a big "f*ck you!" to the fans who waited years between novels, only to have a crappy [i]Twilight Zone plot palmed off on them. It was so bad that King actually interjected himself into the last chapter to tell the reader to stop before reading an ending they weren't going to like!

I mean, Jesus Christ! Up yours, king! I want the $30 bucks I threw away on that wad of toilet paper, Steve-o ya shameless hack!

George Martin is headed down the same road; A Dance With dragons reeked of cliches, unimaginative repetition and desparation. Doubt I'll bother with anything else by martin; he's fit to row in the S.S. Hack alongside King. Pity, that series started out very promising as well.

Found a musky Dumas in the attic. Has anyone read, Louise de la Valliere?

Treat your bed like your sword, bleed, breed and fall on it.
