CP is a horrible thing, I think we all agree on that.
But what I find nearly as offensive is how politicians exploit the crime to trigger public support for legislation that would otherwise, by any reasonable person recognize it as another wholesale assault on Constitutional rights and a government takeover attempt of the internet. (i.e. The Patriot Act et.al. justified by "terrorism)

For example, Tx Rep. Lamar Smith (who authored SOPA) now has introduced the Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act, to purportedly combat child pornography by requiring ISPs to record everything you do when you’re online and then make it available to police without a warrant.
His justification is to enforce CP laws but the list of Constitutional Rights violated in the process I think reveals his true motives. We need to be aware of this all too common ploy.
Exploitation it seems is not an act exclusive to child pornographers.

As morally horrible as I find this to be,the way the law is written-he committed no crime because he did not possess these images.

Are we talking about 17 year olds or 7 year olds because they are both equally illegal under federal law.

Not really. It's more a proactive approach. They are looking at images, which means they are fantasizing about doing things themselves. The more potential predators are in jail, the better.

You do all realize that the #1 purveyor of cp in the US before the internet was the US post office, don't you?

Wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that the #1 supplyer today is still the US government.

Kinda like all the terrorists that the CIA and the FBI create by having their informants and undercover operatives hatch the plans and provide the technical expertise to do it?

That's a slippery slope,key word being"potential".It sucks to a degree but you just can't lock someone up because they "might" be fantasizing about what they"might" do.
