Health officials have learned that cantaloupes are to blame for a salmonella outbreak that has infected 141 people in 20 states, sending 31 people to the hospital and killing two.

More than a third of those salmonella Typhimurium cases happened in Kentucky, which is also where both deaths occurred, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The bad melons came from a farm in southwestern Indiana, according to the CDC, which cites an investigation by federal, state, and local agencies. Officials interviewed 24 ill patients, and discovered that 18 ate cantaloupes prior to becoming ill.

They do not want you to grow or sell your own produce because you are not responsible enough to make sure it is safe to consume.

But it's okay if they are not responsible enough to make it safeS977

wtf. I choose to purchase a cantalope this week - and it is from the grocery store <my mistake for not going to a local grown farmer's market> and the dam sticker says:

"KANDY, produce of U.S.A/product of E.U."

OK, still not sure where it came from so I googled "Kandy cantalope" and got many screen fulls of stuff (from 2011) of nasties "Kandy" cantalopes/melons- recalls and salmonella and ...

k, chucked this one in the can and am heading to the public market tomorrow.

Nearly a year ago Rocky Ford melons were recalled due to Listeria but none or very few of the locals who ate them got sick...just the ones that were shipped.
