Nearly a year ago Rocky Ford melons were recalled due to Listeria but none or very few of the locals who ate them got sick...just the ones that were shipped.

then it was contaminated during transport.

from the cdc report:
"Among persons for whom information is available, illness onset dates range from July 7, 2012 to August 4, 2012."

I remember being really sick for a couple of days. Felt like I had been poisoned. I threw out quite a bit of food thinking it was something I ate. This is probably what it was.

On the other hand, I was thinking it was because my refridgerator temperature had dropped during that heatwave and I thought maybe my mayonnaise must have went bad. I still haven't touched it and keep forgetting to buy another. Must have been the melon. I don't remember having too much of it though, but definitely had some.

Also, there was a lot of milk going bad too soon during that heatwave. I read the truckers were saving gas and shutting off the truck coolers periodically and the temp would drop below adequate. State cops randomly pulling them over and testing. I remember getting a couple of mouth fulls of bad milk accidentally which probably didn't help matters either.

I can't imagine how E. coli gets inside a melon, it must be on the outside. Solution: wash the outside thoroughly before you cut it, preferably with a vegetable brush to get at the rough skin.

I have a garden full of yummy melons that beat out anything you'll get in the store and they're bacteria free.
