Stephen King's The Stand

The novel is divided into three parts, or books. The first is titled "Captain Trips" and takes place over nineteen days, with the escape and spread of a human-made superflu (influenza) virus known formally as "Project Blue", but most commonly as "Captain Trips". The virus is developed at a U.S. Army base, where it is accidentally released. While the base tries to shut down before any infected person can escape, a security malfunction allows a guard and his family to sneak out. Unfortunately, they are already infected, and set off a pandemic that kills an estimated 99.4% of the world's human population, as well as that of domesticated animals, such as horses and dogs.

The Last Train is a post-apocalyptic survival story and concerned a group of survivors, cryogenically frozen in a railway carriage when a meteorite struck the Earth, and their struggle to adapt to a new world, where everything they had known is dead and gone.

The Thing From Another World

A United States Air Force re-supply crew is officially dispatched by General Fogerty (David McMahon) from Anchorage, Alaska at the unusual request of Dr. Carrington (Robert Cornthwaite), chief of a group of scientists working at a North Pole base, Polar Expedition Six. They have evidence that an unknown flying craft of some kind has crashed nearby.

The Prisoner

The series follows an unnamed British agent who abruptly resigns his job, and then finds himself held captive in a mysterious seaside "village" that is isolated from the mainland by mountains and sea. The Village is further secured by numerous monitoring systems and security forces, including a mysterious balloon-like device called Rover that recaptures those who attempt escape.

The Devils Backbone

A boy named Carlos (Fernando Tielve) arrives at an orphanage, thinking that he will be staying there temporarily, until his father returns from the Spanish Civil War. In the center of its courtyard, there is a bomb which was defused. Carlos then sees a ghost of a boy in the kitchen doorway who disappears shortly after. When he goes in to investigate, he is distracted by two orphans, Galvez and Owl, whom he befriends. He shows them his toys and comics, until Jaime (Íñigo Garcés), an older orphan, steals one of them. Carlos starts to fight with him but is distracted by the sight of his tutor and his bodyguard driving away without him. Although he doesn't know it, his father is dead, and he will be staying in the orphanage indefinitely.

Dr. Who - Genesis of the Daleks - 1975

Voted 3rd best Dr. Who episode ever by the Telegraph.

The Time Lords send the Doctor to Skaro's home planet to ensure that the Daleks will never be created. It's the first appearance of Davros, who, like the Daleks, was such an iconic design that the current team haven’t felt the need to rethink his design in the new series, and Michael Wisher gives an extraordinary performance in the role. Some of the dialogue between the Doctor and Davros is among the best the series has ever had. The Daleks, created by scriptwriter Terry Nation, were inspired by the Nazis, and this influence is laid bare in the militaristic Kaleds (the Daleks' forebears).

Dr. Who - The Caves of Androzani - 1984

Voted 2nd best Dr. Who episode ever by the Telegraph.

Peter Davison bows out of the role with easily the best regeneration tale. There is something of a Jacobean revenge tragedy in this grim story of corporate greed, conflict and betrayal, and the Phantom of the Opera motif rears its head in the figure of Sharaz Jek (Christopher Gable), the first of many villains to lust after the nubile Peri (Nicola Bryant). John Normington’s asides as Trau Morgus add to the character's evil machinations and Graeme Harper's direction lifts the story to new levels.

Forbidden Planet

Early in the 23rd century, the United Planets Cruiser C57-D has been sent to the planet Altair IV, 16 light-years from the Earth. Its mission is to discover the fate of an expedition sent 20 years earlier to establish a colony on the planet. Soon after achieving orbit, the cruiser receives a radio transmission from the surface: Dr. Edward Morbius of the original Earth expedition warns them away, saying he can't guarantee their safety and that he needs no further assistance.

It Came From Outer Space

Author and amateur astronomer John Putnam (Carlson) and schoolteacher Ellen Fields (Rush) watch a great meteor crash to earth near the small town of Sand Rock, Arizona. After visiting the crash site, John Putnam notices a strange object at the impact site, and comes to believe the meteor is not a meteor at all, but an alien spaceship.

Downfall

In 1942, a group of German secretaries are escorted to Adolf Hitler's (Bruno Ganz) compound at the Wolf's Lair in East Prussia. After dictating to her for a moment and despite multiple mistakes, Hitler selects Traudl Humps (Alexandra Maria Lara) to be one of his personal secretaries.

The scene shifts to Hitler's 56th birthday on April 20, 1945. Secretary Traudl Humps (now Traudl Junge) is awakened in the Führerbunker by the sound of Soviet artillery. Later, Generals Wilhelm Burgdorf and Karl Koller confirm to a surprised Hitler that the Red Army is just 12 kilometres from the city centre.

The story revolves around Adolf Hitler, from his childhood with his authoritarian father Alois and beloved mother Klara, to his life as a destitute student trying to pursue a career as an artist. It also documents his gradual embrace of anti-semitism.

Hitler is then shown to join the German Workers' Party and befriends Ernst Röhm, leading to the Munich Beer Hall Putsch and finally his quest to become Chancellor of Germany.

Star Trek The Original Series - Space Seed

Voted 3rd best original Star Trek episode by Empire Magazine.

The episode that spawned the most acclaimed movies of the franchise, Space Seed introduced audiences to Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically engineered super-soldier who, along with a bunch of other gene-spliced ne'er-do-wells, had been in stasis for nearly 300 years. Naturally, he is woken from his super-nap, and surprises no-one by trying to take over the Enterprise.

Star Trek The Original Series - Where No Man Has Gone Before

When the Enterprise attempts to penetrate a space barrier, it is damaged and creates a potentially worse problem. Two crew members, including Kirk's best friend, gain psionic powers that are growing at a geometric rate. That leaves Captain Kirk with the difficult choice of either marooning them or killing before they get so powerful that they lose their humanity and become truly dangerous.

The Andromeda Strain

When a military satellite returns to Earth, a recovery team is dispatched to retrieve it; during a live radio communication with their base, the team members suddenly die. Aerial surveillance reveals that everyone in Piedmont, Arizona, the town closest to where the satellite landed, is apparently dead. The base commander suspects the satellite returned with an extraterrestrial organism and recommends activating Wildfire, the government-sponsored team that counters extraterrestrial biological infestation.

The story focuses on the cast of Galaxy Quest, a once-popular television space-drama series starring Jason Nesmith (Allen) as the commander of a spaceship called the NSEA Protector, Sir Alexander Dane (Rickman) as the ship's alien science officer, Fred Kwan (Shalhoub) as the chief engineer, Gwen DeMarco (Weaver) as the computer officer, and Tommy Webber (Mitchell) as a precocious child pilot.

Eighteen years after the show was canceled, at a Galaxy Quest convention full of costumed fans with Guy as the emcee, Jason is approached by a group of people whose leader, Mathesar (Colantoni), claims that they are aliens called "Thermians". Jason goes with them to what he assumes will be an amateur filming session, but the Thermians really are aliens, octopoidal creatures using Appearance Generators, a device that makes them appear human.
