hmm...Popcorn

...and layers of iridium & strontium, (from space), were laid down in the ice core record...

...and damned near all of N. America burned to a char, killing off to extinction most of the large mammals, leaving a black char layer in the geologic record often called the black mat or the termination boundary event...

...and scientists the last few weeks have ruled out a meteor hitting Canada as the cause of the termination boundary event...

The Earth's rotation axis is not fixed in space. Like a rotating toy top, the direction of the rotation axis executes a slow precession with a period of 26,000 years.

LaViolette right again! Black Hole emitting waves in it's accretion disc

Black Hole's Mystery 'Wave' Surprises Scientists

Astronomers studying an unusual black hole system have spotted a never-before-seen structure in the disk of matter encircling the system.

Swift J1357.2, an X-ray binary system that regularly emits outbursts of high energy, consists of a black hole slowly consuming its companion star. Matter from the doomed star falls into the accretion disk, which surrounds the black hole, feeding it dust and gas.

While observing the system, a team of scientists noticed an unusual vertical feature traveling through the material.

"It's the first time we can resolve such [a] structure in an accretion disk, and it might be ubiquitous in X-ray binaries during the outburst state," Jesus Corral-Santana, of the Astrophysical Institute of the Canary Islands in Spain, told SPACE.com by email. [The Strangest Black Holes in the Universe]

A hidden structure

The black hole contained in Swift J1357.2 is one of the millions of stellar black holes that dot the Milky Way galaxy.

About three times as massive as the sun, the behemoth likely formed when a single star collapsed inward on itself. The resulting, city-sized body packed a great deal of mass into a tiny package, creating a strong gravitational pull on nearby dust and gas.

Located in the Virgo constellation, approximately 4,900 light-years from Earth, Swift J1357.2 also contains a small companion star, which has only a quarter the mass of the sun. This companion star orbits the pair's center of mass every 2.8 hours, one of the shortest known orbital periods for such systems.

The black hole pulls material from the companion star into its accretion disk, occasionally emitting the X-ray bursts that enabled scientists to find this otherwise hard-to-spot system, researchers said.

Corral-Santana and his team took hundreds of optical images of the system using the Isaac Newton and the William Herschel Telescopes, both of which are in the Canary Islands. Studying the light produced by the accretion disk, the researchers noticed a periodic dimming in the system, sometimes occurring over the course of only a few seconds.

"Since the orbital period of the system is 2.8 hours, those dips cannot be produced by eclipses of the companion star. They are much faster," Corral-Santana said. "Therefore, they must be produced by a hidden structure placed very close to the black hole, in the inner accretion disk."

The new find can only been seen in the outer, optical portion of the accretion disk, not on the inside, where X-ray bursts originate. The X-ray emission, which shows no periodic variation, unlike its optical counterpart, indicated a vertical structure was hiding the black hole, Corral-Santana said.

Rather than appearing at a set, predictable time, the structure shows up over a steadily increasing period, indicating a wave-like movement through the accretion disk.

"It is a wave produced in the accretion disk, moving outward," Corral-Santana said, "like the wave produced when a stone is dropped in calm water."

The missing population

The wave-like feature also provides information about the orientation of the black hole.

Someday soon, this will be shown to be complete rubbish... courtesy of the Electric and Plasma Universe folks.

I eagerly await that day. I'm not sure it will be in my lifetime, because the "inertia" of mainstream astrophysics is like a speeding locomotive that seemingly can't be slowed... but eventually the track will run out and over the cliff it will go. Goodbye!! And good riddance!! It's all complete bunk, complete fantasy. Stars are not "nuclear furnaces", and black holes are nothing but capacitors discharging on a galactic scale.

"Scientists think it will take the black hole about a year to completely devour the cloud, with the peak of its feast occurring around September of this year."

and

Scientists also hope to learn more about the cloud and where it came from. For example, some theories suggest there could be a hidden star buried beneath the gas that is currently invisible, but which is feeding the cloud with gas from within.

Mysterious Crab Nebula Flare

Once thought to be a stable source in the sky, the Crab Nebula has erupted in another gamma-ray flare.

The Crab is at it again.

On March 3rd the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope spotted a flare from the Crab Nebula, a spike in gamma-ray emission that’s three times greater than the average output. The Italian AGILE satellite detected it, too, and on March 4th both teams sent telegrams calling for more observations. As of yesterday, the flare is ongoing.

This flare isn’t the Crab’s first fit. Since 2007 AGILE and Fermi have detected about a half dozen events, the most fantastic that of April 2011, when the Crab erupted in an outburst at least 30 times brighter than the nebula’s norm. The new flare is the brightest since that event. These flares put out 1,000 times more power than the Sun does at all wavelengths.

Astronomers still don’t understand why these events happen. The Crab Nebula, or Messier 1, is the remnant of a supernova seen on Earth in AD 1054 and one of the brightest gamma-ray sources in the sky. Inside it the dead star’s core spins 30 times per second as a pulsar, shooting its lighthouse-like beam into space as it whirls. A hot, magnetized wind of electrons and positrons streams away from the pulsar and dumps energy into the surrounding gas, making it glow.

The pulsar’s wind could be to blame for the flares, says Fermi team member Rolf Buehler (DESY Zeuthen, Germany). He and his colleagues think that somewhere in the wind magnetic fields suddenly snap into new configurations, accelerating electrons that then emit the gamma rays as they corkscrew along magnetic field lines. These flares should originate within about one-third of a light-year from the pulsar and come from a region about the size of the solar system (that’s about 1/10,000 the size of the nebula).

But so far attempts to nail down the flares’ locations have failed. Gamma-ray telescopes don’t have great angular resolution, meaning astronomers need to use lower-frequency instruments to narrow in on an event’s place in space. Such efforts have turned up nothing: observations in radio, infrared, and X-rays haven’t detected conclusive signs of a flare.

“At the moment we are all a bit mystified,” Buehler says.
