RE: Antarctic Peninsula is warming up rapidly
Some of these incidents DO seem to occur at the location of active volcanoes.

The red triangles mark the locations of active and recently active volcanoes.

arctic sea ice blog. very helpful. updated last on aug. 7...? click thru blog, 3-4 pages.

also remember the polar vortex? not to be overlooked. not sure what is jamming up my computer but it slowed waaaaaay down when i started opening links to that so maybe you have something informative you can share on the polar vortexes?

Rec is too buys spreading lies about the "sky is falling" to read the actual research that documents not much is happening to the Antarctic Peninsula. This study uses radar images going back 12 years.
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/05/17/ne...-12-years/

It should be noted that things are not melting in East Antarctica, instead the worlds largest body of fresh water is expanding. The temperature seldom gets above zero degrees Fahrenheit, so we wouldn't expect the ice to melt, but snow keeps falling growing the ice sheet further. Because of the difficulty of measuring there is no reliable estimate of ice loss or gain in Antartica as a whole
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/07/27/an...estimates/

If Greenland and Antarctica WHERE melting, there would be a continued rise in sea level, and as the chart shows that follows, sea level leveled off in the last 5 years and in the last 2 is decreasing.

ah...that was the page that slowed my computer way down, did it again. grrr!

well i could tolerate it long enough to see that the articles the poster resourced were going back to 2007 and 2011. this does NOT bring us into present time regarding what is going on. NOW. i would be very interested in hearing your opinion as it relates to present time. i've been researching it for a couple weeks. i'm not keen on sourcing from a random blog with spelling errors that does not have current info.

Thanks Rec and Tethys. Not only for the thread, but all the supporting links and information as well.

5 stars.

Unprecedented warming? New study shows temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula were 1.3 degrees celsius warmer 11,000 years ago. Hope this demolishes the idea our weather is unusually warm. Just a slight variation in the background of natural variability.

Relax..there are 3 different explanations given so far on this thread for any warming that may be occurring.

My only comment has been to remark some of these events are occurring in locations near to active volcanoes - so not global warming.

Thanks for posting your articles.

I dont think I can help you with polar vortexes, O'Mally.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MEDFORD HAS ISSUED A FREEZE WATCH… IN EFFECT FOR FRIDAY MORNING.
Quote:WIDESPREAD FREEZING TEMPERATURES POSSIBLE OVER MUCH OF NORTHERN KLAMATH AND LAKE COUNTIES

COOL HIGH PRESSURE WILL MOVE OVER THE AREA THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY MORNING. CLEAR SKIES AND LIGHT WINDS WILL LEAD TO ADDITIONAL COOLING.

INCLUDING THE CITIES OF…BEATTY…CHEMULT…CRESCENT…GILCHRIST… SPRAGUE RIVER

* TEMPERATURES: 28 TO 32. SOME LOW SPOTS MAY FALL INTO THE MID 20S.

* COLDEST TEMPERATURES EXPECTED AROUND DAWN FRIDAY MORNING.

* IMPACTS: SENSITIVE CROPS AND VEGETATION COULD BE DAMAGED OR KILLED IF NOT PROTECTED.

Freeze in AUGUST????

Anyone watching the weather knows that change is here and more on the way.

RE: Large methane reservoirs suggested beneath Antarctic ice sheet
Large methane reservoirs suggested beneath Antarctic ice sheet

The Antarctic Ice Sheet could be an overlooked but important source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, according to a report in the August 30 issue of Nature by an international team of scientists.

The new study demonstrates that old organic matter in sedimentary basins located beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet may have been converted to methane by micro-organisms living under oxygen-deprived conditions. The methane could be released to the atmosphere if the ice sheet shrinks and exposes these old sedimentary basins.

"It is easy to forget that before 35 million years ago, when the current period of Antarctic glaciations started, this continent was teeming with life," Tulaczyk said. "Some of the organic material produced by this life became trapped in sediments, which then were cut off from the rest of the world when the ice sheet grew. Our modeling shows that over millions of years, microbes may have turned this old organic carbon into methane."

The science team estimated that 50 percent of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (1 million square kilometers) and 25 percent of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (2.5 million square kilometers) overlies pre-glacial sedimentary basins containing about 21,000 billion metric tons of organic carbon.

"This is an immense amount of organic carbon, more than ten times the size of carbon stocks in northern permafrost regions," Wadham said. "Our laboratory experiments tell us that these sub-ice environments are also biologically active, meaning that this organic carbon is probably being metabolized to carbon dioxide and methane gas by microbes."
