so i'm interested in moving to tennessee and spending money at the ecovillage training center there at the farm...
currently in central illinois living rurally...
concerned about the TSA highway roadblock check points and what else they might have goin on in the state that would infringe on my regular life...

who's got the scoop?

Both of our Senators voted for the NDAA, you have the TSA ranging up and down our highways at will, their talking about TSA check points at sporting events similar to airport screenings.

Then there's the religious fundies that trample everything that might be considered 'satanic' while allowing pastors to molest children and the gov to abuse it's citizens.

I'm thinking that finding a banana dictatorship on a small island somewhere in the Pacific or off South America might be the safer route to go right now.

And yes I'm in TN. Not far out of good ole Music City itself. Close enough to Nashvegas to visit but not close enough to have to deal with the crime.
this is what i want to do while in tennessee

I live in TN. I traverse the state monthly. Every other month, I drive from Memphis to Chattanooga. To be honest, I have NEVER seen a TSA checkpoint.
I have lived here for 30 years and I have to say, the cops in TN are pretty chill.

Tennessee is a great state. Jhikpghf.

I live 10 minutes from THE FARM, been there many times, what do you want to know?

i want to know if it's worth the money to apply for the apprenticeships and take the workshops... i am also interested in their school's community interaction (the K-12) with the rest of the homeschool community in the area...

we've been checking out the area remotely here the last week... in columbia the housing is about the same prices as here, but i can't find too many rural listings and nothing further south/west than columbia... my husband found job listings for the same type of work he is doing here...

i'm done with BT/Monsanto cattle feed corn and soy... it sucks here...

know anyone who's taken the midwifery at ina may's midwifery edu center?

Jobs are hard to get around this area, a lot of people have to commute to Nashville for work. I would stay out of Columbia.. Summertown is a lot more of what your looking for..farm and open spaces. Never took a class there but did do some business with one of the founders of THE FARM, he actually came out in a bus to by the land they now own. You can live at the farm too, did you know that?

yeah, i know you can live there, but you gotta get to know em and slip in like its natural... i don't wanna live there... my older kids would not integrate well... i just wanna take advantage of the education on permaculture and sustainable living and alt energy and even the midwifery...

jobs are depressed where we are too... but husband does cable /satellite installation and there is always a need for rural contracted work... it's not the best income, but at least we don't have to live in the nasty cities

We don't have the same sort of gang problem that places like NY, Boston or LA has but we've had a few issues with it in Nashville recently.

Columbia seems ok as long as your not right in downtown. We live on the flip side of Nashville from there so I'm not overly familiar with it.

Bookmarked the link. Looks interesting.

Columbia is Too busy and Too Dark.. Mt Pleasant or Summertown is the place to be.

where would i look for rentals remotely in those areas? i can't find anything on craigslist and don't know any local rural paper publications to look at

Another place they stop people-NOT the TSA but local LE is any where near known drug vendors. They will stop everyone going through the neighborhood from time to time, insisting they had a light out or did not stop at the light, etc, etc. They will keep you there questioning you until you agree to let the search your car. This will probably never affect you,but try to stay away from run down looking areas.

City life sucks for many reasons.

LOL You're at The Farm? Holey shit I thought that was dead in the 80's.

I'm from Middle but not into that lifestyle so I probably cant help you. But if its rural you want you can still get lost in the country within an hour of Nashville.

BTW, I love the state of Tennessee and there's no place I'd rather be. Unfortunately stuck in Florida for the meantime and I dont know anything about this TSA bullshit, havent heard anybody complain about it either and my whole family is still up there in Middle. Good luck.Heartflowers

Computer satellite installation is big here, he should have no problem getting a job with that skill.

RE: Lets talk about Tennessee
Ghengy's right. You can get lost in the countryside in less than an hour if you head outside of Nashville. Plenty of woods and undeveloped areas to hike through as well.

I've seen 2 TSA checkpoints in the past 6 months. Not an extremely high profile but they are out there. State cops on the highways can be a real pain but for the most part the local cops are pretty cool. At least the ones in the areas I live and work in are cool. Some of the ones towards Memphis and up in the mountains can be real nasty though.

I've lived in a few different places and I"ve been here in TN for almost 15 years and despite it's faults I still think it's one of the better places to live.
