Anyone have any tips to add below to spot profiteering shysters in the alternative media?

Here’s my take:

If they look and sound like used car salesmen (or saleswomen) then they probably are. (Sorry Pastor Williams, you are very entertaining and I love you lots, but I think you would do very well in the used car business.)

If their website leads you to page after page seeking some form of subscription when you are searching for information then get out of there.

Never take anyones statements at face value. Always check the source or seek confirmation elsewhere. For example, looking through 2014 prophecies yesterday I came across a site predicting an earthquake of at least a six magnitude will strike somewhere not specified in the three days between Jan 2nd and Jan 4th. This initially seemed quite specific until I checked on the US Geological Service website where I was informed that since 1900 an average of 150 magnitude six or more earthquakes have occurred worldwide each year. That’s one around every two and a half days. So much for Mr. Shyster’s predictions.

Alex unohu? Yes

Skeptical Overlord? Yes

I do hope you are counting these forums as part of that alternative media.

Sure, being paid has to be a bit of a red flag, but lets face it, people have to eat and pay their mortgages. I only get annoyed when they accumulate vast wealth and flaunt it in our faces, like some TV preachers. I don't think Alex unoho or David Icke fall into this category yet.

That's no excuse.

Supporting the SYSTEM is what keeps the SYSTEM.

I avoid those kind of people at all costs, which is why I don't watch Fox News. chuckle

The first thing I always ask myself is "why are they telling me this?" Are they selling gold, or a book? Then there is consistency. Like if they say they are a former intelligence agent with 30 years in the CIA why are they telling random strangers?

The second is whether they actually have experience or degrees in the area they claim to be an expert on.

Keep in mind that everything you buy at a grocery store is simply a farm product all pimped out and spiffed up with fancy packaging and additives and advertising and placement. Even "organic" is a selling point. A ten cent potato is turned into a four dollar bag of chips.

Are their claims verifiable or are they some vision or dream or message from God? Prophets have lots of tricks when their prophecies fail. It could be for another year. We are still waiting for biblical prophecies after 2000 years. Or Camping predicting the rapture where it was spiritualized as happening in the spirit when it failed to occur.
