wall Live Chat: Human-Triggered Earthquakes
Getting rid of wastewater by injecting it into deep rock formations has been shaking things up lately. Scientists have been making a connection between deep disposal and quakes in such places as New Mexico, Texas, Ohio, and Arkansas, but they are only now beginning to learn how to predict when messing with Mother Nature is ill-advised. Is there a connection between "fracking"—the brief, high-pressure injection of water into Earth’s crust to free up natural gas—and any of the quakes that have happened lately? How big could triggered quakes be? And is there any hope for anticipating which deep injections will set off intolerable seismic activity?

So fracking causing earthquakes is no longer just a theory, does this sort of legitimize it?

fracking is not just used for gas wells, it is also used for oil too. but what most don't know is that a injection well is usually only under around 500psi or so, fracking operations usually run around 3,000psi ..

I think it's pretty interesting about the chat. maybe we can have this pinned so those who may have questions for the geologists could ask using the link in the OP.

Just a suggestion

No, but it distracts the sheep from the more relevant issue of natural earthquakes rising in frequency and intensity...

My theory is that Americans are so goddamn fat their sheer weight alone is causing tectonic shifts.

Jhikpghf

True that. I've never seen a fatter, greasier, more unhealthy population than the US...

There are a lot of man made disasters happening for a few reasons and one is through removing vital oil from the crust thus removing the lubrication for plates to move freely.

There is also the releasing of pressure going on from within the earth. That is an ongoing thing but the release of pressure has intensified recently, causing more earthquakes and volcanoes to erupt. Some of these volcanoes have been dormant for most of our entire lives(look it up).

Just wanted to add my two cents to the discussion to spur some thoughts;)

RE: Live Chat: Human-Triggered Earthquakes
Yup they've already proven a connection in Ohio between fracking and earthquakes:

http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.a...pate452770

"Last month, Ohio officials concluded that earthquakes there last year probably were caused by wastewater from hydraulic fracturing for natural gas injected into a disposal well."

Also, to put 3,000 psi in perspective, that is 432,000 pounds per square foot. That is like stacking 216 tons on a surface only 12" x 12". A lot of pressure.

It also distracts the "sheep" from state sponsored terrorist attacks on American soil

Absurdious, you don't think fracking has caused more quakes here in the u.s. or had any influence at all?

To be honest, I haven't looked into fracking all that much. Is there a chance that it could have an influence, absolutely.

But I also think the human ego gives itself too much credit....

RE: Live Chat: Human-Triggered Earthquakes
Fair enough, absurdious peace
I won't say fracking causes every quake in the u.s., but man made quakes are indeed a reality. They are probably only about 5% or less of earthquakes in the u.s., but I guess it's just the fact that this is possible is concerning. Humans do give themselves too much credit, just look at how much credit is given to haarp for causing all the natural disasters in the world.
