I had always heard of Agenda 21 and knew the general tenets, but I really had not investigated it in my own city. While doing some research on something related last night, I stumbled across a considerable amount on infomation that indicates that my city has been implementing Agenda 21 for a long time and is darned far along in the process. Disturbing, to say the least.

I'm trying to parse this new information, and was hoping some perople here (who are more familiar with this topic than I am) would be willing to engage in a discussion and information sharing thread.

It's all really mind boggling - like peeling back the layers of an onion.

In Cali a lot of the Agenda 21 goals are tied into legislation on Green House Gases...look into Assembly Bill 32 and senate Bill 375

So far as I can tell, my city's been working on implementation since 1993. Except, they make sure not to call any of it Agenda 21. Here, we have what's called the "Austin Comprehensive Plan", which looks pretty darned in line with Agenda 21 goals to me. Agenda 21 - driven plans often go under the guise of "Sustainable Development" plans, "Smart Growth" plans...

All right, one last bump.

I know Agenda 21 is one of those conspiracy buzzwords we hear a lot, but many of us have not investigated. I would highly suggest you look into your own region's plans to enact the goals in the Agenda 21 UN document.

I think you'll find that you have an unbelievably huge conspiracy in your own back yard.

and i was hoping for a few council seats to change.

funny for a so caled progressive hip 'educated' city the voter turnout for local elections is pathetic..

the local elections count more than the presidential one for actual change to happen in your city.

I'm really still in the preliminary stages of researching this, but what I am finding is that there really is - literally - a shadow government in place in my city and region. No one has ever heard of them, and lots of non-profit groups in the area get funding from these shadow government type organizations.

Just, WTF? I mean, it's one thing for us to speculate about conspiracy theories on forums like this. But, finding the underpinnings and logistical local framework for the local implementation of Agenda 21.... kind of blows me away.

The conspiracy is no longer a conspiracy - it exists in real life, if you look for it.

Folks, these local plans have been in place in some places since the 90's. They are *well* on their way to completion. If we don't wake the frick up and look at what's going on in our own communities, we're gonna be fooked.

Check your local planning commission and zoning code changes. In local stuff,it will look like the following, probably not directly say "agenda 21"
County Planning Commission to "update" zoning laws to comply with a new "Comprehensive Land Use Plan"

That's absolutely true. This was the worst turnout in Austin City elections history. And, I really have to wonder about all of the incumbents keeping their positions. Not to mention the shenanigans with changing the date of the local election to a date different than the primary.

The weird thing for me is that, in some of the circles I run in locally, I work with the same people who are pushing the Austin Comprehensive Plan. One such example is this movement, which apparently has a LOT more power to influence public policy than I realized: http://www.transitionaustin.org/

And, for anyone in another city - goole your city's name plus the words "Transition Town" - I guarantee they're behind, or at least an influential player in local efforts in your city to put Agenda 21 policies in place.

Yup, they do not use the words Agenda 21. Instead, you'll see words like:

Comprehensive Plan
Redevelopment Plan
Smart Growth
Sustainability Initiative
Sustainable Growth Initiative

I just skimmed through it, it sounded like a lot of limiting things, so to call it smart "growth" sounds like a lot of oxymoronish hooey!

Yeah, if you want to know how Agenda 21 is being implemented in your area, look for your local Transition Town hub - they'll have the details. (I always wondered how the Transition movement in Austin was able to have such a great effect on local policies, even though they have no popular support from the people. They're a "grass roots" movement with no grass roots support, yet they accomplish a lot.)

What is a Transition Initiative?

It's a place where there's a community-led process that helps that town/village/city/neighbourhood become stronger and happier.

It's happening in well over a thousand highly diverse communities across the world - from towns in Australia to neighbourhoods in Portugal, from cities in Brazil to rural communities in Slovenia, from urban locations in Britain to islands off the coast of Canada. Many of these initiatives are registered on the Transition Network website.

These communities have started up projects in areas of food, transport, energy, education, housing, waste, arts etc. as small-scale local responses to the global challenges of climate change, economic hardship and shrinking supplies of cheap energy. Together, these small-scale responses make up something much bigger, and help show the way forward for governments, business and the rest of us.
