MEAD!!! I made a summer batch, 11.5 gallons :)
I'm so thrilled I just had to tell you guys! Check it out:
30lbs of Miller's natural wildflower honey at $62
I used several kinds of yeast from the brew store, also attempting to culture them myself.
One carboy will be sweet, one will be dry.
They're bubbling good and make my home smell yummy!
In a couple months I will have 11.5 gallons of mead for a total of about $75. Cheaper than buying it from the store, and more special.
I'm estimating here because I'm still perfecting everything, but I should get 80-90 regular sized bottles of wine out of this. I hate dealing in lbs and gallons, but alas its just easier for now.
I've never made beer but always wanted to. I make killer mead so far though, people love it but I'm totally not sharing like I have before
Anyone else brewing right now? I just started this batch 4 days ago. I like to hug them

Not quite the same, but I'm making old fashioned fermented pickles right now. It's my first try, but they're coming along nicely. I think fermenting stuff is neat, would like to try mead or wine soon or maybe homemade ginger ale. How long does it take to make mead?

Hi Jalira honey that is so interesting! Congrats. I've always wanted to try to get into brewing wine or something but it always ended up sounding too complicated so I haven't bothered. I've never tried mead but I've heard it is honey and herbs, I think? Is it a sweet drink? I don't like too sweet of drink but a little sweet is ok. It is potent?
Hope you're doing well

I love to make mead. I have a few bottles left of some I made with champagne yeast. We named it Dragon's Breath - it tastes a little like green tea with spices, but with fire when you exhale. It is around 12 years old now.

Yea you're fermenting stuff! I love fermenting stuff! Right on, pickles! I bet they're going to be great. Mead takes at least a month to make, the amount doesn't matter much timewise, even a gallon will take a couple months.

Hey VV! Mead is quite easy compared to other brews. I don't put herbs in mine because I'm kind of a "simplist" if that makes any sense? No need to complicate the natural goodness of honey with herbs, spices, or anything but water. If you want to try it sometime I can give you detailed instructions on how I do it. Basically mix honey, water, and yeast, let it vent or it will blow up!

That is soooo cool! Ive wanted to taste that ever since reading Beowolf!

It is not invincible, but broken (Luke 11:21-11). It is not assured of success, but is surely doomed "(Revelation 20:2-3)

I can't really drink much anymore , it gives me kind of an instant hangover as soon as I get buzzed :(
But I still like to make it, partly because I love the smell.

That's so awesome! I don't even drink anymore but I've been VERY curious about the process of making beer from home. I recently found out that my grandpa from my mum's side (who I never had a chance to meet - R.I.P.) used to make his own beer, regularly. That peaked my interest even more. What's the cost of hardware if a person were interested in trying it out? It looks like you're using 5gallon water bottles. Is that correct?

Not sure on the costs for beer hardware. I am using a 5 gal and 6.5 gal carboys (they're glass), which cost about $25 each. I also got nice caps with water locks for about $6 each. You need a cleaning brush too, $5-$15 depending on how bad the store rapes you. I've seen beer kits which could get you started (and learning), I can't remember the price but it wasn't that bad, less than $100.
