MSL Right on Course -- TCM-5 Cancelled
Fri, 03 Aug 2012 04:43:25 PM EDT

With less than three days to go before touchdown on the Red Planet, Curiosity remains in good health, with all systems operating as expected. Given the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft's consistent and stable course, today the project decided that the planned Trajectory Correction Maneuver 5 (TCM-5) and its corresponding update to parameters for the autonomous software controlling events during entry, descent and landing will not be necessary. As of 12:35 p.m. today PDT (3:35 p.m. EDT), the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft was approximately 468,000 miles (753,200 kilometers) from Mars, or a little less than twice the distance from Earth to the moon. It is traveling at about 8,000 mph (3,576 meters per second). It will gradually increase in speed to about 13,200 mph (5,900 meters per second) by the time it reaches the top of the Martian atmosphere.

===================================================
A NASA rover is only three days away from landing on Mars, and you can follow along with the adventure on the Red Planet thanks to a lineup of exciting public events.

The car-size Mars Science Laboratory, which is also known as the Curiosity rover, is scheduled to touch down on the surface of Mars on Aug. 5 at 10:31 p.m. PDT (1:31 a.m. EDT Aug. 6; 0531 GMT). The rover will spend roughly two years analyzing the Martian environment for evidence that the planet is, or was, a habitable place for microbial life.

But first, the Curiosity rover will have to survive the nerve-racking trip through Mars' atmosphere.

NASA Television will be broadcasting live coverage of Curiosity's landing on Aug. 5 beginning at 8 p.m. EDT (11 p.m. EDT; 0300 GMT Aug. 6). You can watch NASA's live webcast here: http://www.nasa.gov/ntv.

The Curiosity (MSL) project has cost $2.5 billion (£1.6 billion). Compare this to the $15.6+ billion (£10+ billion) price tag of the London 2012 Olympics and you realise that the Olympics could have funded more than 6 of these probes!

Good luck to Curiosity as it nears the most dangerous and risky phase of the mission, re-entry and landing.

Indeed, we as a species have some VERY misguided priorities.

Just think where we could be and what we could do today if we didn't need to spend the majority of our national budgets in one way or another on bribing the upstanding residents of urban areas not to burn down their own neighborhoods and buying votes!

What a damn waste...

Oh, so is this where we will make "first contact"? Can't wait for the fake images from the government to pour in. This will be the best Hollywood production CGI movie in a long time.
