Gunman was on feds’ radar,

Wade Michael Page, the man identified as the gunman in Sunday's
shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., was eyed by federal
investigators "more than once" because of ties to white supremacist
and extremist groups, the Los Angeles Times reports, but federal
officials "determined there was not enough evidence of a crime to open
an investigation." The report comes a day after the Southern Poverty
Law Center said it had known about Page—a member of at least two
white supremacist bands—for more than a decade. The Montgomery,
Ala.-based law center said it had been tracking Page since 2000, when
he "attempted to purchase goods from the neo-Nazi National Alliance,
then America's most important hate group."

The FBI revealed today that Wade Michael Page, the Army veteran and
white supremacist who killed six people at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek,
Wisconsin on Sunday, appears to have died from a self-inflicted
gunshot wound to the head after being shot in the stomach by a
police officer who responded to the scene. Teresa Carlson, special
agent in charge of the FBI's Milwaukee office, said at a press
conference that the officer had "neutralized the threat" by shooting
Page. "I have seen the video and it is an amazing shot," said Carlson,
"and thank goodness. Subsequent to that wound it appears that Page
died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head."

Canadians this week ridiculed a nervous American tourist over his
criticisms of Canada’s strict gun laws following what he said was a
“menacing” encounter with two young men in a Calgary park. Walt
Wawra of Kalamazoo, Michigan detailed his account of a chance
meeting in Nose Hill Park in a letter to the editor of the Calgary Herald.
Wawra said he and his wife were confronted in broad daylight on a
paved trail by two men who asked “in a very aggressive tone” if the
couple had “been to the Stampede yet?” “They approached in such an
aggressive, disrespectful and menacing manner,” he wrote, that the
off-duty cop instinctively reached for where his sidearm would have
been had he been south of the border. “I quickly moved between these
two and my wife, replying, ‘Gentlemen, I have no need to talk with
you, goodbye,’” he said. “I thank the Lord Jesus Christ they did
not pull a weapon of some sort.”
