The actual basis of our food supply comes from grains and pastures. NOT vegetables. So, though I strongly encourage people to grow their own gardens, shop at farmer's markets, and join local CSA's, don't count on garden vegies supplying more than 25% of your nutritional needs, at the absolute most. !0% or less is more likely and usual.

The same critique applies to those promoting variations on hydroponics. What can you grow with hydroponic methods? Garden vegetables are again the only thing that makes any economic sense; you are not going to grow fields of grain or pastures.

That is a very valid point, and one that I've been giving a lot of thought to this year.

Gardening vegetables does make economic sense, in more ways than most people realize. Once you get the hang of gardening, you will soon have more produce than you can consume. I've got half of a very small city lot, and I'm already overproducing summer squash, swiss chard, and will soon have more tomatoes than I can consume. You can can/ freeze the extras. But, you can also sell the extras to neighbors, at a local farmers market, or on craigslist. The income you get from selling your extra produce can be used to buy local meat, butter, milk, etc. from local farmers (at the farmers market or through a CSA). You can also barter your veggies for fresh eggs easily within your city.

Perennial bushes, vines, and trees can provide fruit, and berries. Nut trees provide a source of fat and protein. Nutritionally, an avacado tree would be a boon for the home gardener.

You can, in most places, have chickens in your yard, even in the city, which provide a source of protein from their eggs and meat (if you choose to slaughter them). Beans are easy to grow and provide an additional, storable source of protein / carbs. Bonus that beans add nitrogen to the soil and chickens produce waster that can be used as compost!

Aquaponics and aquaculture can be used on a scale suitable for the home gardener. I have not tried it yet myself, but have seen many successful setups. Then you would have fish to eat as well, and the water from the aquaponics makes for a great fertilizer!

If you don't want to have to buy feed for the chicken or fish, you can feed them food scraps and even soldier fly larvae (which are simple to raise and prolific procreators).

If you really want to explore alternative food sources, look into pigeons (pigeon squabs are supposedly a delicacy) and raising meat rabbits.

There are lots of options, even for the city dweller - we're just not used to thinking about them as a culture.

Just my 2 cents.

Look people, this is real simple. Food production has been corrupted to the point where you can't rely on others to create your food. Your choices are grow-it-yourself or eat various shades of poison. It really is that simple.

As much as I would love to say you're full of shit-I can't.The facts bear you outTissue
Source your food whenever possible.
