devil Mrs. Obama’s 2nd-Term Agenda: ‘Impact Nature of Food in Grocery Stores’
Asked by Parade magazine, "What do you hope to accomplish in your second term?” First Lady Michelle Obama said she wants to "impact the nature of food in grocery stores" with the aim of cutting sugar, fat and salt.

“With 'Lets Move!,' our goal is to end the problem of childhood obesity in a generation,” Mrs. Obama said. “And while we’ve seen some very profound cultural shifts, we still have communities that don’t have access to affordable and healthy foods. We still need to find a way to impact the nature of food in grocery stores, in terms of sugar, fat, and salt.”

Mrs. Obama also discussed the challenge of “educating families” on healthy lifestyles in a society where “TV is rampant.”

“[W]e need to keep educating families about how to structure a life that is healthy in a society where TV is rampant and communities don’t have enough resources in terms of sports and activities,” she said.

As CNSNews.com previously reported, Mrs. Obama’s “Lets Move!” campaign has published an online guide called “Supermarket Shopping 101” that provides tips for shoppers on the importance of making a list and how to navigate a grocery store.

“Steer clear of the cookie, snack and soda aisle until after you’ve collected everything on your list--at that point, your cart should be full, which might make you feel less tempted to buy things you don’t need,” the guide states.

That means she wants to ban most of the pop and junk food by dictating to the stores what they can and can't carry - or at the least - limit the amounts of available goodies.

First Lady Prepares Course on How to Shop for Groceries

First Lady Michelle Obama wants to help Americans figure out how to navigate their local grocery stores.

As part of another initiative to get Americans to eat less and better, Mrs. Obama launched an online course called “Supermarket Shopping 101,” which aims to nudge shoppers toward more government-preferred choices.

Cookies, snacks and soda do not appear among the preferred items, as the letsmove site instructs shoppers to “steer clear” of them.

The website offering the course, letsmove.gov, also features meal plans and downloadable recipes.

Michelle Obama Shares Her Supermarket Savvy, Or Something
Jeannie DeAngelis

Like a hovering mom telling her children to finish up those green beans, once again Michelle Obama has ratcheted up her role of national instructress a few notches by incorporating into her anti-obesity campaign an intelligence-insulting online course called "Supermarket Shopping 101."

The intent of the web-based tutorial is to urge grocery shoppers to "steer clear of the cookie, snack and soda aisle." Written by iVillage.com senior food editor Lisa Cericola, "Supermarket Shopping 101: Read This Before You Hit the Grocery Store" was "first published among the materials the first lady presented online" when she recently did a stint as an iVillage.com guest editor/educator.

As a result, clueless grocery shoppers moseying over to iVillage to read a horoscope or to catch up on Michelle Obama's opinion of "Fifty Shades of Grey" must have been thrilled to stumble upon a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get the inside scoop on how to maneuver and stock up a grocery cart.

The guidelines on the supermarket shopping cheat sheet encourage shoppers to make like Santa Claus and "always check your grocery list twice...to avoid walking in circles...[and to] steer clear of impulse buys" and, above all, to always shop on a full stomach -- full of healthy, Michelle Obama-approved food choices, of course.

To sum up the gist of the recommendations, Supermarket Shopping 101 tells shoppers to "[s]teer clear of the cookie, snack and soda aisle until after you've collected everything on your list [because] --at that point, your cart should be full, which might make you feel less tempted to buy things you don't need." In other words, feign disinterest in Double Stuff Oreos and Fruit Loops cereal; then, if you can't control yourself, at least if you hit the produce aisle first you can always hide your edible contraband under some cantaloupes and celery.

The bad news is, for those who consider themselves checkout-line challenged, unfortunately the paper-or-plastic controversy was not addressed, nor was the precise science of bagging groceries.

The instruction guide also neglected other pressing issues, such as how and where to park your car; how to avoid getting stuck with a shopping cart that has a crazy wheel; or how returning your cart to the designated area incorporates exercise into your busy shopping day.

Despite the guide's omission of key shopping pointers, Michelle still felt compelled to share with supermarket-shopping students her own exciting supermarket journeys. The first lady's anecdotes included the timely tip that while out "gathering foods from afar," always "stay on the outer aisle...to avoid going in and getting the processed, packaged foods."

Incorporating the "more flexible schedule" excuse, Michelle must have felt qualified to use herself as an example because she maintains she was the "primary shopper before coming to the White House." What Mrs. Obama didn't mention was that back in Chicago, after she supposedly dragged the goodies home from Dominick's, current White House chef Sam Kass was anxiously waiting to do all the slicing, dicing and cooking.

And so, although Mrs. Obama's attempts at helping people to eat better and to make healthier food choices seem benign on the surface, it's offensive and condescending for her to imply -- once again -- that Americans need her to tell us how to go about feeding ourselves. Supermarket Shopping 101 is just another example, even though no one asked her to, of Michelle Obama taking it upon herself to coach adults on the proper way she thinks we should live our lives.

RE: Mrs. Obama’s 2nd-Term Agenda: ‘Impact Nature of Food in Grocery Stores’
i don't see how or why this is a bad thing
all first ladies have their "causes"
and it is very true that in poor areas people don't have access to fresh foods or they're more expensive or people just aren't aware of the profound difference eating healthy really makes

what's wrong with encouraging families to eat less sugar? snacks? just look at overweight, gluttonous country!

and don't think i'm saying this because of my personal politics
i'm voting libertarian (if i vote at all as i'm pretty disgusted tbh) or i'll vote paul if he somehow manages to land on a ticket which is wishful thinking i know

why focus hate on the first lady for trying to educate the uneducated on healthy foods?
why in poor areas are there fast food restaurants on every block but you have to walk 6 blocks to find a grocery store? this is true in some cities
get the poorer people to demand healthier foods- that's a win for all of us

the problem is, though, that while michelle is touting healthy foods her husband has put monsanto in charge of the fda and usda

that's what we should focus on, not the first lady's attempt at helping create an interest in good food

Grocery stores open up wherever they can turn a profit. They close up because of HIGH CRIME RATES - being robbed and shoplifted to the point where they can no longer turn a profit. Asshole criminal people create their own food deserts.

I thought she was moving to Hawaii?

If society fell apart, we - the people would build a new one. Most people are good at their core, and when we see things that are wrong we work to fix them together. Make friends with your neighbors, get involved with your community - because we will rebuild our lives, our communities, from horrible circumstances we always will.

Jhikpghf And most likely add more soy to everything. << Personal grievance that soy is in everything now. Really sucks trying to buy anything when people are allergic to soy.

Doesn't soy contribute to ED in men?

My beef is with corn products added to everything. Just found out my applesauce that I get every week has corn syrup in it...don't know what the f*ck for, maybe it stretches it so you get less than what you think you're paying for.

Soy is a natural estrogen, thus it "calms" men down by feminizing them; also look to the increase in breast cancer. I would much rather have corn products personally than soy. It really does suck having kids that are allergic to soy.
