It happened to me, and I wasn't a soldier. I was living up in Canada, in Mississauga. There is a large Muslim population there. I went to buy cigarettes, he asked for ID. I showed him my passport. He got very angry and said he refused to give me cigarettes, and had some kind of diatribe against Americans (I couldn't catch the whole thing, he was talking very fast). I was so upset and shaken I walked out and said nothing. Later on, I called the chain operators, and from what I understand, he was reprimanded.

It DOES happen. Probably not so much in the USA, though.
