I am building a custom off-road vehicle from a 1991 Geo Metro 4 door hatchback. I am a redneck and enjoy playing in the mud and since I am a Geo Metro enthusiast, I decided to build a custom mud machine for fun and just in case, a SHTF bug out vehicle. Here it is when I first got the car. It's a rust free car from Washington State and no title. If you do not want to read through the whole thread, please see the compilation video below.....................

So far the car has been chopped and weight reduction in progress............

The 3 cylinder 55 HP engine is weak, so it is getting a complete rebuild with performance parts including camshaft, advanced timing gear, over-sized pistons, and stainless valves..........

The plans I have to complete this are as follows...........

27X8X12 ATV tires mounted on the original 12" rims.
Complete under-body aluminum skid plate.
4" chassis lift for ground clearance.
Roll bar for safety and support of the cut uni-body.
Welded transmission gears for full time posi-traction.
Radiator relocated to back to prevent damage and clogging.
Transmission and oil coolers installed to keep fluids cool.
Air intake snorkel to prevent engine from sucking water when submerged.

Last, but not least is the custom exhaust which will come straight out the hood as "Triple Stacks". The reason is because anything underneath the car will break or get hung up on rough terrain. This is an automatic, so no shifter linkage to bend up on rocks.

The custom exhaust shop has just finished my header stacks and mounted them on a "Test Vehicle" and put a video up before they get shipped to my garage. Check these out.....

Just me but I'd have gone with something like a Subaru Justy or Suzuki Swift (believe the Subaru is more or less a rebadged Swift but I know little of these cars). Slightly less fuel efficient engine since it's the slightly bigger 4cyl, but AWD. Downside I suppose obviously would be more components to potentially fail and I imagine those are harder to come by for a price cheap enough to justify hacking one apart though.

Should be a cool project!

What about the tires and suspension?

And transmission work?

Lift kit?

Any reinforcements? Beside the roll bar?

many mpg is the direction i am heading
getting @55mpg on the bike but i gotta get a cab chuckle

You should have converted the rear area to a fully sheetmetal enclosed sleeping area.

Sleeping inside the vehicle ahs to be way more healthy and safe than sleeping outside in a tent.

Plus you can store provisions inside, away from bugs, bears and coons<==those little devils will tear things up to get yummy goodies :-)

Plus add a CB radio--just in case.

Fuel economy is a primary reason for using this vehicle. I can go 500 miles on 10 gallons of fuel in my regular, daily driver Geo.

Too many electronic parts for a bug out vehicle. Do not discount the possibility of an EMP or CME.

It's been awhile since I got to work on my BOV, but I got to get the engine done for it. Like always, I rebuilt the head and the bottom end of this engine myself...........

I am still a long way from being finished, but at least I can move it around easily. The exhaust is extremely loud and bad-ass!
