Mystery Island Discovered in Pacific
The source of an enormous floating mass of pumice spotted this week in the South Pacific Ocean off the coast of New Zealand has been discovered: NASA satellite images and other sleuthing science have pinpointed an erupting undersea volcano called the Havre Seamount as the culprit.
On Aug. 9, the HMNZS Canterbury ship observed the floating pumice "island" - measuring a whopping 300 miles (482 kilometers) in length and more than 30 miles (48 km) wide - along a voyage from Auckland to Raoul Island, New Zealand. A maritime patrol aircraft, RNZAF Orion, had seen the weird mass and reported it to this Royal New Zealand Air Force ship. Soon after, the HMNZS crew saw the thick mass of porous rocks.
"The rock looked to be sitting two feet above the surface of the waves, and lit up a brilliant white colour in the spotlight. It looked exactly like the edge of an ice shelf," said Lieutenant Tim Oscar, a Royal Australian Navy officer, in a statement.
Pumice, which forms when volcanic lava cools quickly, is riveted with pores due to gas getting trapped inside as the lava hardens. The result: lightweight rocks that can therefore float. (Recent research suggests such pumice replenishes the Great Barrier Reef with new coral.)
Where the huge floating mass came from was a mystery. At the time, according to the Royal Navy, scientists thought an underwater volcano, possibly the Monowai seamount, which has been erupting along the so-called Kermadec arc, was responsible. [See Photos of the Pumice Raft]
However, though Monowai is several hundred miles to the north of the pumice raft, and it was known to have erupted on Aug. 3, scientists have now ruled it out: An airline pilot reported seeing pumice as early as Aug. 1, according to a statement by NASA.

RE: Mystery Island Discovered in Pacific
There were other threads about the pumice, but thanks for this article which explains where it came from.
I made a prediction last year, for an eruption at 179/33 degrees, in between the Kermadec Islands and New Zealand.
This one occurred at 179/31 degrees. ;)
I'm safe in the knowledge that I will never be put into the nuthouse ... My doctors say I would be a bad influence on the other patients.

Close, will the TAB pay out on that in OZ?
Pretty damn close I say, it pool it would probably sink the ball anyway so I will give you that one, good enough for me.

Wow, I listened to this find on the national radio service this morning, its nice to to view the graphics of event, just recently there has been lots of plate movement, earthquakes, and volcanic activity in our part of the planet, was surprised TV news never mentioned a word of it.
Thanks for posting op

Shit, I forgot to put my bet on :(
You don't want the rest of the vision to occur. It was a tsunami for both NZ and Oz, so the eruption is not over yet, if it all plays out.
However, the bit about the pumice being white is weird. Maybe that is symbolic. I wasn't actually shown an eruption, it felt more like it was some kind of ejection.
Made me think it could have been anything from energy to lava, or whatever else there can be inbetween. A new island isn't out of the question either.

It was all over the TV news. They talked about it for days...that and the Olympics.

Ken Ring says this is all to do with an immanent eclipse due between NZ and OZ near the end of the week?
Might be interesting to see, pack a well stocked stash, plenty of fresh water and lots of toilet paper in case it gets too exciting.

I'll be far enough away from the action, to be OK.
Its you guys who had better put on the inflatable life jackets ;)
If Lumeria rises up off the Queensland coast, then i am screwed too though, or better start climbing.

My friend in Wellington said it is still smelling of sulfur today, even more so than before.
They say the volcano on the mainland is releasing large amounts of sulfur. Hoping she will post a link tomorrow to that info.

RE: Mystery Island Discovered in Pacific
Trying to find the photos of a similar event near Tonga in 2006, when a yacht sailed into a field of floating pumice, and then saw a new volcanic island which has recently risen up from the ocean.
After reading the following, and then clicking on a link at the end, it all gets very weird. Starts talking about primordial soup and origins of life.
A pumice raft is a floating raft of pumice occasionally created by ocean-based or near-ocean volcanic activity.
Pumice stone
Volcanic activity in the South Pacific near Tonga on August 12, 2006 caused the emergence of a new island. The crew of the Maiken, a yacht that had left the northern Tongan islands group of Vava'u in August, reported that they had seen streaks of light, porous pumice stone floating in the water—and then had "sailed into a vast, many-miles-wide belt of densely packed pumice." They went on to witness the ephemeral island known as Home Reef breaching the surface.
Pumice rafts drifted to Fiji in 1979 and 1984 from eruptions around Tonga, and some were reportedly 30 kilometers (19 mi) wide. On 10 August 2012 a raft with an estimated area of 10,000 sq miles was observed near Raoul Island, North-East of New Zealand by New Zealand's Royal Navy.
Biologists suggest that animals and plants have migrated from island to island on pumice rafts.
Astrobiologists have hypothetically linked pumice rafts to the origin of life.

Whoa whoa whoa....mainland?
South island is the mainland, Maui fished the North island up from the South island...so Te Wai Pounamu is the mainland..they original called it Te Waka a Maui, which makes more sense...it was his boat.
Sorry for being a NZ-tard
