My friend in Wellington said it is still smelling of sulfur today, even more so than before.

They say the volcano on the mainland is releasing large amounts of sulfur. Hoping she will post a link tomorrow to that info.

Whoa whoa whoa....mainland?

South island is the mainland, Maui fished the North island up from the South island...so Te Wai Pounamu is the mainland..they original called it Te Waka a Maui, which makes more sense...it was his boat.
Sorry for being a NZ-tard chuckle

I like NZer-tards. They are the most fun tards on the forums. After us Aussies of course.

Heartflowers

I only wrote mainland, so I didn't have to look up how to spell Toriorooriogogoioio

This link takes you to the description of sailing into a pumice raft, with photos. This happened in 2006.

Yeah it was strong last night as there was no wind. Rain and breezes have cleared it this morning. Not surprising when the lastest news article has this to say:

"It's putting out about 2000 tonnes of sulphur dioxide and 4000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per day. That's what people are detecting and smelling."

I wonder if the smell of sulphur is going to be a long term thing for us. This mountain is degassing big time and no one has any idea when it will settle down.

Hard to know if degassing is a good thing or a bad thing. At least the quakes have settled down.

RE: Mystery Island Discovered in Pacific
Volcanic Gases

An erupting volcano will release gases, tephra, and heat into the atmosphere. The largest portion of gases released into the atmosphere is water vapor. Other gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrogen fluoride (HF), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen gas (H2), NH3, methane (CH4), and SiF4.

Some of these gases are transported away from the eruption on ash particles while others form salts and aerosols. Volcanic gases are also produced when water is heated by magma. Gases also escape from pyroclastic flows, lahars, and lava flows, and may also be produced from burning vegetation.

Recently, a new volcanic hazard involving tropical lakes in volcanic regions was discovered. Carbon dioxide built up at the bottom of tropical Lake Nyos was released from the bottom of the lake when the lake overturned. Fifteen hundred people were killed and 10,000 people burned in this disaster (Bryant, 1991).

Harmful concentrations of volcanic gases usually do not extend further than 10 km from the volcano (Scott, 1989).

Hope its not Lake Taupo that is releasing the gases. Most likely, from reading the above, it is the rising magma heating the water, hence the hydro eruption.

Kermadec Islands, New Zealand
summit depth 1100 m
Underwater volcano

Havre Seamount is located in the Kermadec Islands, NE of New Zealand. The area is part of the Havre Trough. The trough and its northern extension to Lau Basin form a 2700-km-long back arc basin that extends from latitude 15 degrees south, east of Fiji, to the Taupo Volcanic Zone on the north island of New Zealand.

Wow - I never knew that. Thanks Spacey. So, there has been rumbling at both ends of the trough - I wonder if anything in the middle will go off to balance it (crazy reasoning here - I know that volcanologists tell us there is not connection to each eruption but can't help seeing a see saw in my head).

RE: Mystery Island Discovered in Pacific
Neither did I until I stumbled across that little piece last night. It does explain a lot of quakes up and down then trench, and around the north island though.

It comes to my mind that a lot of the really deep quakes were near Fiji, which I believe was a symptom of the deeper chambers filling up, to refuel the upper ones.

If that magma has the potential to flow down to you guys, and/or erupt anywhere along the trench, its not a good thing if they are all connected.
