Was really hoping for clear skies tonight but looks like this rain is going to hang around all day. I wanted to add this object, whatever it is, is extremely bright. Maybe a magnitude of -2 or so. Its relative size is difficult to determine because of its brightness. But at a guess, its apparent size would be maybe 10-15% of the moon? It's damn big and bright. A yellowish color too. The atmosphere makes it seem to shimmer or twinkle.

First time we saw it my girlfriend swore it was a UFO. I laughed my ass off. I KNEW it was Venus. went to prove it. Venus was below the equator and had already set. I didn't know what to say then.
There is definitely something there though. Ison? Màybe

if you will, what state are you in and what time did you see it?

The only other bright light I've seen in the west is Antares, the heart of Scorpio.

I have been watching this on the scope fo about 12 days. I thought it was Venus because it is appoaching the eath on its obit just behind us so it will look bighte that if it was on the other side of its obit. The weid thing about that one is is seem to be too low on the hoizon fo a planet. They all ise and set like the sun and this one is eally low in the south westen sky at sunset

It's not venus.. from the northern u.s. it appears much closer to the sun than Venus. It's there for about an hour and sets slowly. I have pictures with it and arcturus together and Venus.

It's almost as bright as Venus sometimes and is always accompanied quite clearly by Venus the sun and Arcturus at sunset, near the setting sun on its southern side..

What is it?

With the crap you write on here, you should write a movie screen play.

Jhikpghf

you are the crap spewer, not me... you ever change your stories of Adam and Eve for example. You post that "hell" is the center of earth and that creator gives people special bodies so they can feel the pain there for eternity, yet accept that god will destroy this world, and you belief to some degree in aliens,,, and can still go on with the center of the earth is God's hell,,, is the center of OUR EARTH "god's hell" for the entire creation then of 5.6 trillion planets which bear intelligent life? Start with RIGHT THINKING and stop your garbage.

If you actually spent TIME OBSERVING what is in your sky, you would KNOW many of the lights up there are NOT stars,, stars don't dim and brighten and turn of the light and move around and flash many colors...

Relax, man. The reasons why stars (or other lights, as it were) seem to flicker, brighten, dim, or even change colours is purely because of our atmosphere. Light traveling through all that air gets affected in these ways. Common knowledge.

Post pics man. I've been trying to see it for a week now.

Hopefully it's clear tonight.

Alabama: long. 32.96 lat -86.74 approx. 6:30 thru 8:00 pm then it just disappears. It doesn't seem to fade or diminish in brightness, it just goes out.

Yep!
We've seen that too. Can't say exactly where, but is a out 250-260°WSW. Maybe 30 or so degrees up. Doesn't stay there long though. An hour perhaps?
I thought it was Venus at first. Yet extremely bright. I also checked some astronomy apps that I have on my phone. I used Google Sky, SkyEye and Stellarium. They showed nothing.
I haven't been home to put one of our telescopes on it or it was poor seeing. Maybe tonight?
Definitely something there. . It's brighter in the night sky by than anything else except the moon.

its interesting how maitreya s saying for years now 'watch the star of maitrey arriving, changing colours'

even more so, since 'sananda' , the head ascended master, is in many sources [ independent from eachother] the leader of arcturus

- i cant tell if this star s an optical illusion.. ufo..whatever

but
since what is going on these days.... its the first time i take these 'coloured stars'seriously

[and i ve been following 'share international' [ maitreyas official blog] since 2007 now]

...we ll see.

How do Iridium satellites look in the night sky?

I had to stay home during the gov't furloughs and I watched this thing every night. It starts out as a dim speck and gradually intensifies in brightness and size. It's usually gone by 7 pm. There is also these two or three "stars" that seem to change colors repeatedly. I believe they are some kind of satellites.
