North Korea Updates - North Korea May be Preparing for Another Nuke Blast
N. Korea begins submarine drills, preparations for nationwide military exercises.

North Korea imposes no-fly, no-sail zones off coasts for possible drills

North Korea has set no-fly and no-sail zones off its east and west coasts that indicates it will conduct major military drills, but test firing of short-to-medium-range missiles cannot be ruled out, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said on Wednesday.

"The North's military ... is preparing large-scale combined military exercises so it may have blocked off the areas for nautical firing or fighter jet firing exercises," Yonhap quoted a South Korean government source as saying.

"But the firing of missiles cannot be ruled out."

One of North Korea's top generals, in a rare appearance on state television on Tuesday, said Pyongyang had torn up its armistice deal with Washington and threatened military action against the U.S. and South Korea if military drills between the two countries continued. The military exercises began on March 1.

North Korea Updates - North Korea May be Preparing for Another Nuke Blast
Kyodo: Some signs of N. Korea's preparation for war seen in Pyongyang.

South Korea says to strike back at North if attacked

South Korea's military said it will strike back at North Korea and target its top leadership if Pyongyang launches a threatened attack in response to what it says are "hostile" drills between U.S. and South Korean forces.

"We have all preparations in place for strong and decisive punishment, not only against the source of the aggression and its support forces but also the commanding element," Major General Kim Yong-hyun of the South Korean army told a press conference in one of the clearest threats Seoul has made.

SEOUL, March 6 (Yonhap) -- North Korea has started submarine drills and stepped up preparations for nationwide military exercises, which may be timed to coincide with annual joint drills by South Korea and the United States set to start next week, military sources said Wednesday.

The latest move comes as Pyongyang has ratcheted up its hostile rhetoric against Seoul and Washington as the two allies last week launched a two-month field training exercise called Foal Eagle. Separately, joint forces will conduct computer-simulated drills named Key Resolve from March 11 to 21.

NATO Secretary General to visit S. Korea Thursday

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen is scheduled to arrive in South Korea thisThursday.

During his three-day visit, Rasmussen will meet with President Park Geun-hye, Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin , for talks on how to cooperate in a number of areas, including counter-terrorism.

Rasmussen's visit will be the first by a secretary general of NATO to South Korea since the creation of the intergovernmental military alliance in 1949.

The NATO chief expressed his concerns on Monday about recent developments on the Korean peninsula adding that North Korea must stop its provocative actions.

South Korea is not a member of the NATO but does cooperate closely with the organization.

"It is very unusual for them to hold talks within 10 days, and I think it demonstrates the two nations' willingness to build a new, cooperative relationship," Cho said.
