~*~Old Wive Tales and Science~*~
...so....just having this discussion with a friend...we ramble ....so no clue how we got here...but I recall my nan who passed at 94 two years ago....telling me things like 'never make your fudge on a cloudy day' she had no idea why this was so important from a scientific point of view...nor did she care...she just knew...access to information and science has given me the answers...fudge crystallizes if the air pressure is off or there is moisture...I also heard things like leave your eggs out in the bowl all day and beat them each time youre in the kitchen...I do so...despite once in a while thinking I might kill everyone...I figure she was the families main baker for 94 years and never killed any of us so she must be right...my grandfather also said time and time again while we were in the garden...'save your seeds'...funny to me now in some ways...as he passed away quite some time ago and yet seemed to know the direction we were headed...and I still have envelopes and pill bottles of the various seeds that he saved...anyway...

....I digress...

What sayings or advice did your grandparents/individuals from a previous generation pass onto you that is now supported by science and/or information in general?

I can remember sitting on the porch with my Nana.

Rocking

She would always be talking about this and that. She always had that way of getting your attention when she spoke:

"Never count your chickens, Before you walk a mile in their shoes." She would say.

I always thought I was stoned being with Nana...

..."The squeeky wheel gets the worm!"

Old native american saying.

Have no idea why but it seems to hold true for us.

"A deer with its tail to the west, makes weather the best; A deer with its tail to the east, makes weather the least."

Thank you for that one Heartflowers

She also had a dreadful fear of dragon flies ...as a child she had always believed they would come along and sew up her lips ...and lilacs were a big no no in the house :)

...also...wooden spoons and kneading/mixing by hand were necessary for certain recipes....and my grandfather planted certain flowers with certain vegetables and fruits...I was lucky to know my grandparents ...of this Im certain...so many things they passed on... that to them were common or general knowledge...it doesnt seem to be this way so much anymore...they also believed in some weird shit too mind you ....

Heh Heh. The old lady accross the street, when I was a kid, she was almost 100 years old. Used to grow poppies. The good kind! chuckle (because the other lady down the street was excited to get some of the seeds. She said these were 'special'.

I dont know what they did with them, but they were old, and happy. Im sure they didnt make them into heroin and inject them. Probly made tea, or something.

Heres a new one tho. I discovered this before it became popular and made a poem. (now its a famouse health aid)

{A magic potion, a magic lotion, for the brain, I explian}

Coffee Beans, Green, Unroasted

In a Cup, of Boiling Water Hoasted

No Distraction, from the Dissatisfaction

Of Burned Beans, Turned Mean
