JOHNSTOWN, Ohio —

Authorities say a central Ohio man who uses a wheelchair fatally shot a man who broke into his home.

The Licking County Coroner's Office said it happened early Sunday when a 33-year-old Johnstown man reported that a man with a shotgun poked him the head while he was sleeping.

The resident, who is a paraplegic, pulled a gun from under the covers and shot the intruder, who died at the home.

It's not wrong. I applaud the paraplegic.

Unlocked doors with guns laying around may not be the best idea though.

Who says his door was unlocked. I lived in Vegas. meth heads used to do home invasions to get drug money. They remember nothing and cops would have to shoot them 10 times to stop them.

All the commies on here think crossing your fingers that they'll go away int he closet is going to help, or the cops. Cops won't come to a call like that. they wait an hour.

John Mutter said the intruder who prodded him awake with a poke to the head with one of his own shotguns was interested in finding more guns.

Mutter, who had fallen asleep on a couch while watching TV in the den of his Sunset Drive home in Johnstown, directed the intruder to elsewhere in the room.

When the man turned, Mutter, a paraplegic who uses a wheelchair, grabbed a .357 revolver he kept within arm’s reach and fired three times.

Police this morning identified Johnstown native Brian Dyer, 27, as the man found dead on the floor of Mutter’s home when they arrived shortly after 2:15 a.m. yesterday.

Johnstown Police Chief Don Corbin said that the shooting appears to be a justified response to a home-invasion robbery.

Corbin said he does not believe charges against Mutter, 33, are warranted, but the case will be presented to the Licking County prosecutor’s office for review.

The intruder entered the house through an unlocked door and had found one of Mutter’s guns before he awoke the man, the police chief said.

Yes.
Guns can and sometimes do SAVE LIVES.

we should ALL be allowed to protect ourselves.

but here in Canada, protecting yourself is A CRIME

damn...dude slept with a gun in his bed.

i for one believe in self defense. i feel it's bad that people are compelled to sleep with guns cause that's a sign of a very sick society. but, no doubt, there are just places where it's a wise thing to do. i'm happy to not be living in such a place, cause i'd hate to have to kill someone for any reason.

RE: Paraplegic fatally shot intruder
If the guy in the wheelchair didn't have guns in his home the intruder would not have found his guns. The outcome would have been different.

I recall a news story recently where a drunk teenage girl walks into a home at night thinking it was hers. The home owner shot her in the dark.

Another recent story of a cop shooting his own son when he came home late at night. Another shot in the dark with no questions asked.

Would it make you feel better if the cripple was beaten to death with a drink coaster?

Now, if you can find 161,998 more cases of accidental shooting like the above, it would be even.

http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp
* A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 0.5% of households had members who had used a gun for defense during a situation in which they thought someone "almost certainly would have been killed" if they "had not used a gun for protection." Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 162,000 such incidents per year. This figure excludes all "military service, police work, or work as a security guard."[12]
