Cut the needles in half too-helps reduce the amount of moisture the tree loses (reduces the load on the root system).
The tips of the needles will go brown but it's only cosmetic.

Depends what part if the country you are in.
The ground will be to cold soon in many areas for planting

They were cute, I couldnt resist taking them home :(

I've been there myself buddy...I love the trees and plants (I've "kidnapped" my fair share over the years), I would seriously get them in pots (indoors for the Winter) or the ground where you want them...before it gets too cold before Winter outside. They are young enough to stand a winter indoors in nicely drained soil until Spring (6 inch wide pots TOPS if they are only 3" tall)...best of luck with them. Plant them far apart in the ground, evergreens tend to need about 15-20 feet between them, information for the future.

I planted them in a pot and theyre outside right now since its really warm where I am and they could probably use the outside after being cooped inside in a water bottle. But will bring them inside before I go to bed since its been cool in the mornings and they will most def be indoors when its cold out.

Best of luck with them, pretty much all I can say aside from adding a fish tank bubbler to the water right now indoors and near a window...get them out of water and get to soil-rooting, even if indoors. Roots are your biggest issue, propagating them/expecting growth in stagnant water will harm them. Should have saved the root-balls and planted them at you liking in the yard. Since you didn't and the roots are exposed at this point, take them through the winter at this point indoors RIGHT NOW, just bring them inside and into neutral pH soil. They will get acidic in time (yeah, they like that). If you want rock-solid micro-nutrients look up "B'Cuzz" on the Net, they will have all you need (very serious PhD program that came up with that stuff...just get the "growing stuff" to save money, the rooting stuff is rarely needed, you don't need the "flowering" solution ever for pines/evergreens). Just trying to help here is all. Money VERY well spent (like $30 or so a bottle which will last a VERY long time...don't use even a half a cap-full in 1 gallon of water per month).

My advice, spend a tiny amount of money in the Spring at a close nursery/plant store, they can give a much wider range of awesome trees/plants that are VERY established (just need water after planting). Look into Firs and other coifers/blue Colorado spruces, you will be happy you did. Best advice...the "Japanese Pagoda Tree", and the MALE ginko biloba "Maidenhair Tree", these Ginkos are over 100 million years old (totally pre-historic yet easy to grow if you have water)...if you have a lovely significant other (or are a beautiful woman yourself), grow these things..."Fringe Trees" (Chionanthus Virginicus)...insanely stunning during Spring...if all else fails, "Smoke Trees" are awesome.

Seriously look into these FOLLOWING things again mentioned, the "Fringe Trees" are my greatest mention here...I recommend them to all that appreciate their lives in semblence with nature...Spring will never be the same after planting "Fringe Trees", stunningly breath-taking flowering like no one here without them can imagine, shrubs that become quite large as in 20 feet wide and 20 feet tall easy...absolutely insane flowering in the Spring, best to bolt on your socks folks. Doubt me if you like, this was awesome advice if I do say so myself...and I never even mentioned "Dawn Redwoods"/rare and exotic easy growers.

Someone got into our heads, with big steel toed boots, cable cutters, and a chainsaw...they went to town. Neurons got exposed, curcuits got rewired. Our brain cells got obliterated... (Denzel Washington..."The Manchurian Candidate".)
