Pope calls for genuine freedom
"HAVANA — Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday concluded his first trip to the Spanish-speaking Americas, launched with a condemnation of Marxism and drug war violence and ending with a forceful plea for "genuine freedom" as he preached from the symbolic heart of Cuba's leftist revolution.

Standing under larger-than-life portraits of revolutionary heroes such as Che Guevara, the pope admonished Cuban authorities for not doing enough to allow the public exercise of religious faith. Later, he met with former President Fidel Castro, and the two octogenarians joked about the hardships of being old men."

RE: Pope calls for genuine freedom
"He also spoke at a public Mass in Havana's sprawling Revolution Square where the Vatican said 300,000 people gathered to hear the 84-year-old pontiff.

In a trip laced with calls for change in Cuba, his last message was aimed at the United States, its longtime ideological foe, which for 50 years has imposed a trade embargo trying to topple the Caribbean island's communist government.

Speaking in a departure ceremony at a rainy Havana airport, Benedict said Cuba could build "a society of broad vision, renewed and reconciled," but it was more difficult "when restrictive economic measures, imposed from outside the country, unfairly burden its people."

"The present hour urgently demands that in personal, national and international co-existence we reject immovable positions and unilateral viewpoints," the German pope, dressed in white vestments, said in his soft voice and heavily accented Spanish."

This is just not true. He visited Aparecida in Brazil in 2007. But Brazil speaks Portuguese, so I guess it's different.

Freedom eh.... doesn't seem like the organisation has a history of ensuring freedom, more like Freedoom. There is a reason plenty of locals around here hoist signs that say "no popery" and while I can accept the Roman Church may have changed, it has a lot of ground to make up if it wants to try and take the moral high ground... obviously just my opinion.

RE: Pope calls for genuine freedom
Ratz used to advocate Marxism as Liberation Theology. He wrote a great deal about it.

Liberation Theology
by
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

The following is to a "private" document which preceded the Instruction of Fall 1984.

1. Liberation theology is a phenomenon with an extraordinary number of layers. There is a whole spectrum from radically marxist positions, on the one hand, to the efforts which are being made within the framework of a correct and ecclesial theology, on the other hand, a theology which stresses the responsibility which Roman Catholics necessarily hear for the poor and oppressed, such as we see in the documents of the Latin American Bishops' Conference (CELAM) from Medellin to Puebla. In what follows, the concept of liberation theology will be understood in a narrower sense: it will refer only to those theologies which, in one way or another, have embraced the marxist fundamental option.

b. While liberation theology today has its center of gravity in Latin America, it is by no means an exclusively Latin American phenomenon. It is unthinkable apart from the governing influence of European and North American theologians. But it is also found in India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Taiwan and in Africa, though in the latter case the search for an "African theology" is in the foreground. The Union of Third World Theologians is strongly characterized by an emphasis on the themes of liberation theology.

I'm waiting for the pope to call for 'amnesty,' myself...

:)

Oh, who you gonna call...?

...what is this which is written in the Tanakh, `'The very rock which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?

The Light shineth in Darkness, and the Darkness comprehendeth it not...

Paraguay. Jesuit Reductions 1600's. The first communist experiment. Indeed Stalin was educated in Jesuit schools.
