gmorning Preps on a Shoestring
I posted a comment on this thread http://www.lunaticoutpost.com/Topic-Lind...pid3591059

But thought that maybe it should have its own thread

We are in the beginning of the slide down into the Olduvia Gorge. Every day there are people waking up to the impending hard times.

What advice can we give at this late date? Many have no money and are either unemployed or under employed and have no cash to spare.

There is no time left to prepare. But these people need a strategy for survival.

This was my post on the other thread

Get into shape, start a walking program. Walk your neighborhood. Say hello to everyone you see as you walk your neighborhood. They will remember you and will not freak out when they see you after Srjceahd You will need these people and they will need you.

Look around your neighborhood, be aware of what resources are there. Make a mental note of anyone with a fruit tree or vegetable garden. If anyone has a garden, get friendly, ask questions, ask if they will teach you about gardening, offer to help.

Learn what wild plants grow on the empty lots and road sides in your area that are edible.

Learn what water sources are in your area. Build a simple sand/charcoal filter before the collapse. You tube has several good tutorials for DIY water filters using cheap materials.

Think ahead to an alternate cooking method after the grid goes down.

If you live in an area where it gets freezing cold in the winter. Plan ahead. Think Eskimo. They survive in the freezing cold, so can you.

#1 issue, stop living beyond your means.

Fix that and you can begin repairing the damage done to your life from when you had the consumer attitude.

When the water supply fails so will the sewer. Without a flushing toilet you will need one of these.

Great vids!

Hubby and I built several of these rocket stoves after watching the vids. We used playground sand because that's what we had on hand. Those cheap stoves WORK! So we have been collecting all the appropriate cans and have been working to make rocket stoves for neighbors to keep.

If anyone makes these, be sure to wear protective gloves when cutting the cans. Anon

Start drying edible weeds to add to rice reserves. They're FREE, tasty and very nutritious!!!

RE: Preps on a Shoestring
I would add - start a front yard vegetable garden. Even if it's just a container garden. Do it in a visible area, and offer extras to your neighbors.

We're in year 3 of front yard veggie gardening. We were the first to front yard garden in our neighborhood, and at last count this spring, we had 12 neighbors gardening.

You would not believe how many people we've met in the neighborhood that have stopped while on walks or riding their bikes to ask about our veggie garden! It's led to conversations about banding together to form a community garden (which we're now entering the planning stages of with the city) and conversations about neighbors yard sharing to grow more produce. A neighbor has offered to host chickens and let us start gardens on her (large sunny) front yard.

The conversation in my neighborhood has turned from individual gardens to conversations about creating a local food supply.

It's really amazing how much community grows around visible, front yard gardens!

We can't grow a garden on our front lawn (city restrictions), but they don't mention anything about fruit trees. I have a mature pecan tree, apple trees, plums, apricots, and pears. We placed the dwarf trees in the front on the lawn areas, and we'll be adding more. The veggies are grown in my "sissy garden" out back. It's a container garden that started out as a Square Foot Garden and soon went to intensive gardening. I'm growing cucumbers, green beans, tomatoes, spinach, mesclun, romaine lettuce, cabbage, carrots, kale, eggplant, celery, and a variety of herbs. After several dismal efforts, I'm finally GROWING FOOD this year!!! We will be expanding the garden boxes come autumn; I hope to quadruple the number of growing boxes.

A simple 2'x4'x6" box of good soil (we make our own compost) will grow enough mesclun to keep 4 of us in salad greens for the entire season. I am on my second cutting of greens, and they are growing back for a third round.
