I read a Buddhist text somewhere or other:

The holiest of scriptures are merely rags with which to wipe the pus from your boils.

I'd be a Buddhist, but they don't believe in God.

CENSORED (by popular demand).

Been reading "My Big T.O.E." by Thomas Campbell. He stresses that the best way to approach anything is with an open mind, but skeptical. He says, "don't believe and don't disbelieve". He devotes pages and pages on how to do this!

Bhudda himself was reportedly an agnostic. Knowing all that was knowable he didn't know if something was behind the mystery. Taoist and Zen hold everything is of itself so. A common Bhuddist and Zen take on this is, how can there be a god when everything is god. Taoist are more apt to say there is nothing but god.

Sounds like what you read might have been more like the Zen Buddhist philosophy which also says if You see the Buddha, kill him.

The Pali Canon is the mainstream Buddhist collection of writings, and doesn't really say such hostile things as the Zen Buddhist stuff which is mostly about explaining anti-dogma and being detached from even the Buddha and any religious teachings that might keep a person from enlightenment or simply "being" in the case of the Zen philosophy.
