RE: Removing Particleboard Glued to the Floor!
just so ya know. a professional flooring installer will have the tools to rip that piece of particle board off your floor in very little time. and since they are gonna be there to level the floor it's not going to really cost you that much more. get a few bids and find out how much it will cost just to have someone else deal with it. it may be cheaper than buying heat guns and renting floor sanders/grinders and u can chalk the whole experience up to a good story for thanksgiving

After reading your most recent information, I think the only way to do this is a concrete grinder and then skimming the entire room with leveler.

Yes, I think you may be right. I may try my hand at the grinder but I know the leveler is not something I'm going to do. I'll let someone more skilled with concrete and who has all the tools to do the job! I'll stick to front steps and stuff like that.

Don't know what happened when you used leveler before but I can tell you if you buy the right stuff it's pretty easy. But the stuff is about $50 a bag and sounds like you are going to need a few.

Yup, that sounds even better. I am so sick of this thing. It has been going on for years and I just want it done.

Oh yes it is a good tale to tell cause I haven't told the half of it and it is just a study in stupid & stupider. I am really quite a clever person but can do some of the most mindless things at times. (don't ever ask about the leaf blower in the house story or the one 'bout the perfumed pancakes ) Ihoohase

Yeah that WAS the best advice.

I have a sheet of particle-board stuck to the concrete with very strong adhesive and I need to remove it. A 17 pound digging bar only chips it up a bit. Any (helpful) suggestions? Tissue

Soak it with water or oil (or both) then let it sit for a while (overnight). It'll make a mess though.

Sounds like it could be the best option when it's all said and done...

Sounds like a classic example of "I cut it off twice and it's still too short"...

Well, the jack hammer may work but this floor disaster still needs to be as cheap a fix as possible. I can't believe how much they charge for rental equipment nowdays.

I am clever at many things but I met my match at trying to install anything other than carpet on this concrete slab in my house.

The carpet had to be ripped out some time back. The bare concrete floor looks as if a troop of baboons poured it after they'd had a 12 pack or two (each). I'ts so unlevel it looks like the top of the rolling sea.

A friend and I tried a bit of concrete leveler and that was disasterous so we had the **brilliant** idea to stick down plywood and since particleboard is cheaper we thought that was an even better idea. Since the floor was so uneven we decided to glue the boards down with adhesive. Two tries didn't work well so the one piece by the front door I used an extra sticky nasty adhesive and weighed the whole thing down with about 400 lbs of weight. I won't go into the rest of the gory details but a couple of weeks later and fed up when the whole mess wouldn't work we left the whole mess sit and sit it has for too long.

Now I've just busted out 99% of the rest of the boards (cause the two times of putting adhesives still didn't work for the most part) and my Waterloo still sits at the front door, mocking me, all 4' x 8' of it.

This is what I do when I look at my floor-----> Scream1

I'm NOT insulting you with this post, please keep that in mind as you read the following...you are NOT qualified to handle this job, just as you obviously weren't to handle the original one. Either hire some Mexican folks loitering near the local hardware store to do it or leave it. I would personally hook up my aircraft rivet gun to my compressor...then would fabricate a "bit/tool" after 5 minutes on my lathe, then hand hammer a chisel edge sharpened only to a blunt tip/slightly rounded at the most. You CAN get the wood off by soaking it in water (a tiny bit would stick to the adhesive I would imagine), I wouldn't go with the circular saw as it would take greater skill than you possess. Just spend about an hour and a half with a drill and semi large drill bit, and even for you I would put some tape around the drill bit (as a depth measuring device) to make sure you can only go about 3/4's through the particle board, and then drill about 1000 holes all over it to make sure you go deep (but not too deep/concrete deep) through the board, as they have a weaterproof coating on the outside layers (front and back). The holes drilled or the circular saw are so the water can actually get to the wood, make it expand, as well as make it soft enough to pry away from the floor (doubtful there in entirety)/adhesive-glue you used.

Once you do that, then bring in the Mexicans, they will get the rest of the wood residue and the glue off. If you don't want to go this illegal labor route, I would buy about 2000 sheets of 60 grit sand paper and plan on getting to know both the inside of that area and the innermost recesses of your most bored mind, as this mistake will cost you many hours of boredom you can't even comprehend. It will be extremely difficult to get to the layer between 3M's greatest and latest adhesives and concrete...then again, and this just now came to me....liquid Nitrogen will shred any adhesive on a molecular level bondage wise...no not sexually, will become VERY brittle and shatter well before concrete if one were dilegent(sp?) and respectful/gentle. You still need to eliminate the wood as it would serve as an insulation against the sub-zero wonder. I would use liquid Nitrogen actually...again you are very highly UN-skilled for this process, do NOT do this. Frostbite is no joke.

Or you could use a concrete floor grinder. It smooths out the entire floor. I used one on my monolithic dome.

You should start a thread on your monolithic dome!

i agree!
hubby wants to make an underground dome 40' wide
hes thinking he wants to lay the rebar on a mound of dirt and then pour the top of dome in concrete.
then he thinks he will have to dig out the dirt after the concrete is set.
idk if thats the best way.he does all aspects of construction so he would save so much money.

i do want an underground home.no exterior maintenance, except mowing the grass, even temp all year round...protection from all weather.
hes been looking at all kinds of sites trying to see how they did it.
he wants to see blueprints

I may or not have a very hidden underground parking garage done in this construction method, that I may or may not be able to drive my old ass tractor over when mowing that area of the yard...I suggest he uses sand as it is both easier to remove, and gives a finer finish to the inner concrete. Not that I would or would not know that this works...lol.

Shoot I figured you'd be done by now with a putty knife and a heat gun. Must not have the energy you used too.chuckle
