it does appear to be a disease, not neccessarily radiation caused, and it has happned before, it actually happens to starfish in protected tanks.

Experts at Canada’s Vancouver Aquarium say they are puzzled by what is causing thousands of sunflower starfish, or sea stars, to die in the waters of Vancouver Harbor and Howe Sound.
What is even more startling is the way the creatures perish — by quickly dissolving in a phenomenon the aquarium has dubbed Sea Star Wasting Syndrome.

“They have disintegrated, and now there is just goo left,” says research diver and taxonomist Donna Gibbs.

But she says that young starfish have been seen in the same area that look healthy, providing hope that the population could rebound.

Aquarium staff say they have had trouble gathering specimens for testing since some starfish that looked healthy in the ocean were goo by the time they reached the lab.

A similar string of starfish deaths was reported in July in the North Atlantic from New Jersey to Maine.

In both the British Columbia and Atlantic areas affected by the die off, there had been a population bloom of the creatures in recent years.

“We think it is disease. It is overpopulation and pestilence,” Gibbs told Global News. “The numbers grew so out of control and then a disease hit them and just wiped them out. That is what we think. We are not sure yet, but that is the first thought.”

Could it possibly be that the radioactive particles they are being doused with, has lowered their Immune System, making them more susceptible to a disease that was in the past not so deadly to so many of them?
Seems like a logical train of thought to me....but I'm just hypothesizing here...Heartflowers

Not a new discovery,.... this is a known issue.

Obviously, not water related, or ALL would be affected,....

As stated, some are fine next to others infected,....

Being an ancient life form,.... no telling what causes this to be triggered. But, doesn't affect them all,.... like a genetically triggered event. Maybe an over population of the food source and it's own way to ensure the species doesn't starve. A secretion from the body from each and X parts per million seen by a filter triggers some to break down genetically.

We barely know what is on the surface. Almost nothing is known about the oceans, 2/3 of our planet. We are a spec in this galaxy, and that a mere flicker in this universe. So much we don't know,.... even about ourselves.

400 tons of radioactive water multiplied by 950 days equals 380,000 tons of radiation in the Pacific Ocean so far....

And that's what they are admitting to...I AM SURE THE TOTAL IS A LOT MORE THAN THAT.......Jhikpghf

Well at least there will be a population explosion before they die off and should be really cheap...I hope it drops the price of the mother of pearl for a while, I will stock up on it and wait for it to go on the list with ivory and make a fortune!

I have not been to the ocean in a few years.

the Pacific is dying. no one seems to care except us.

what a shame.

list of the dead:

seals
polar bears
salmon
sardines
dolphins
whales
birds
starfish

and many more

I have not eaten seafood since March 11 2011

I knew when they said every thing is fine, that we are all screwed.

just a matter of time as this poison works its way up the food chain.

The exposure to harmful pollutants including radioactive particles probably hasn't helped the starfishes immune system any. You are probably right about radioactive particles lowering the starfish’s immune system to fight off disease. Just because some starfish haven't died doesn't mean that ones that have died weren't affected by the radiation. Just like in humans some starfish will have a stronger immune system than other starfish. No two starfish are exactly the same even though they may look all alike to us.

To put that in perspective...

That is a total of about 9.5 million gallons of water.
There is a total number of 352,670,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of water in the ocean.

Starfish are small creatures. It wouldn't take much nuclear radiation to affect a starfish. They are not some big creature like a whale or Human.
