Mars rover is damaged.

Mars rover Curiosity prepares for first test drive; NASA says broken wind sensor no problem

Scientists on Tuesday prepared to send Curiosity on its first test drive over the billion-year-old rocks of Mars and said a busted wind sensor won't jeopardize its mission of determining whether life could exist there.

The rover will move forward about 10 feet (3 meters), turn right, then back up and park slightly to the left of its old spot, Watkins said.

"You will definitely see tracks," he said.

Meanwhile, researchers discovered the damaged wind sensor while checking out instruments that Curiosity will use to check the Martian weather and soil.

The cause of the damage wasn't known, but one possibility is that pebbles thrown up by Curiosity's descent fell onto the sensor's delicate, exposed circuit boards and broke some wires, said Ashwin Vasavada, deputy project scientist for Curiosity.

Good to keep all this disinfo in one thread tho and not be starting endless threads junking up the entire internet.

Still do not know why you chaps feel compelled to post this to a conspiracy forum.

How does it tie into the bigger picture?

What exactly does convince you. A faceless voice with a camera phone taking a video of himself looking at a sky map on a computer? Where you both have no idea what you are looking at and they have no idea of what they are talking about?

Yeah you can keep that bullshit. facepalm

The Milky Way now has a twin (or 2)

Research presented Aug. 23, 2012 at the International Astronomical Union General Assembly in Beijing has found the first group of galaxies that is just like ours, a rare sight in the local Universe. The Milky Way is a fairly typical galaxy on its own, but when paired with its close neighbours -- the Magellanic Clouds -- it is very rare, and could have been one of a kind, until a survey of our local Universe found another two examples just like us.

Sophisticated simulations of how galaxies form don't produce many examples similar to the Milky Way and its surrounds, predicting them to be quite a rare occurrence. Astronomers haven't been able to tell just how rare until now, with the discovery of not just one but two exact matches amongst the hundreds of thousands of galaxies surveyed.

"We found about 3% of galaxies similar to the Milky Way have companion galaxies like the Magellanic Clouds, which is very rare indeed. In total we found 14 galaxy systems that are similar to ours, with two of those being an almost exact match," says Dr Robotham.

RE: Science Daily
The Universe Isn't a Fractal, Study Finds

Stars crowd together into galaxies, galaxies assemble into clusters, and clusters amass to form superclusters. Astronomers, probing ever-larger volumes of the cosmos, have been surprised again and again to find matter clustering on ever-larger scales.

This Russian-nesting-doll-like distribution of matter has led them to wonder whether the universe is a fractal: a mathematical object that looks the same at any scale, whether you zoom in or out. If the fractal pattern continues no matter how far you zoom out, this would have profound implications for scientists' understanding of the universe. But now, a new astronomy survey refutes the notion.

The universe is fractal-like out to many distance scales, but at a certain point, the mathematical form breaks down. There are no more Russian nesting dolls — i.e., clumps of matter containing smaller clumps of matter — larger than 350 million light-years across.

Cyber eye's

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/scienc...38768.html

A breakthrough in understanding how the eye sends visual information to the brain could soon lead to "bionic" implants that restore almost perfect vision to millions of blind people, scientists have announced.

Researchers have cracked the neural "code" used to shuttle images from the eye's retina to the visual centres of the brain and have incorporated this code into a microchip that can be inserted into the eye.

Tests on the retinas of blind mice have radically improved their vision compared to existing microchips. The scientists said they have also cracked the code for monkey vision which is essentially the same as that used in humans.
