Senators introduce bill to exclude hemp from controlled substance list
A group of bipartisan senators introduced a bill on Thursday that would exclude industrial hemp from the definition of marijuana.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) introduced the bill, which has three co-sponsors —Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.).

S. 3501 would amend the Controlled Substances Act to clarify that hemp is not a drug, despite being part of the marijuana plant family. Hemp has much lower levels of THC, the chemical in marijuana plants that make people high.

Wyden tried to offer an amendment doing the same thing to the Senate passed farm bill in June, but it was ruled non-germane by leadership.

“I firmly believe that American farmers should not be denied an opportunity to grow and sell a legitimate crop simply because it resembles an illegal one,” Wyden said. “Raising this issue has sparked a growing awareness of exactly how ridiculous the U.S.’s ban on industrial hemp is. I’m confident that if grassroots support continues to grow and Members of Congress continue to hear from voters then common sense hemp legislation can move through Congress in the near future.”

It grows wild in Illinois, Iowa and into Nebraska along I 80. It is left over from WWII when the government planted it. They have spent millions trying to eradicate it because of the "drug problem" it represents.

It grows along fence rows in corn fields, along railroad tracks and in ditches. It is even called ditch weed. people would harvest it at one time to mix with real weed as a filler. You could smoke that shit until the cows come home and not get the slightest buzz. It has 0 potential as a drug. It has huge ass seeds and little red worms in it. If you used 100 tons of it and made that into a drop of hash oil it would not get you high.

it grows wild in kansas too. it has many uses and doesn't strip the soil of nutrients like cotton or tobacco plants. imo the only reason it is illegal is because of big industry.

In Indiana they pile up the useless ditch weed every years and have TV cameras film the police destorying 2.3 million dollars worth or whatever they claim it's worth. Fighting that drug war they are. Lmao

A Great Uncle of mine had a patch at the edge of his wood lot left over from the war department requirements. Half acre maybe. Had it fenced to the front pasture to allow the cattle in to rub through it to keep flies and other pest bugs off. The horses also.

Non chemical kind of guy. Thanks Howard.

Missouri's Show Me Cannabis Regulation initiative didn't make the ballot. A read through showed it basically did away with sanctions against the Herb.

Baby steps toward sanity.

An encouraging sign.

Fun Fact:
While I was Active Duty, I was stationed at Ft. Belvoir, VA. Ft. Belvoir is on land that used to be part of George Washington's estate. Washington was a hemp farmer. His field diaries give instructions for some plots to be "culled of the male plants entirely, leaving only the female plants, unfertilized."

Every summer-- even into the mid-1990's-- Hemp and Marijuana volunteers would grow along the jogging trails, and the Base Police would make a show of removing it.

It was always amusing coming around a bend in the jogging trail, and seeing and smelling God's Green Flowers on that Base.

"I am the bride at every funeral, the corpse at every wedding."-- Brother Theodore
I had a job trading bits for pieces.
We made Wrinkles-- advertised them as Creases.
