Serious discussion of Online Privacy
We have lots of IT people, software programmers, users and administrators on this boat so let's have a serious talk about online privacy. There are new laws proposed and ISPs are changing policies this year to cut down on piracy, etc. Where is the line drawn on the privacy of internet users and even more, how does freedom of speech limitations effect all of this soup? I'd like your thoughts on the subject from opinions to advise on how members and their families can protect their privacy and other rights online.

There is absolutely NO expectation of privacy on the interwebs- I can guarantee that. EVERYTHING you do online is cataloged.

RE: Serious discussion of Online Privacy
You might look at this way... when you walked in the electronic door, you pretty much opened the door... you have no privacy... at all... anywhere... because you are being tracked, everywhere you go. You were aware of that, weren't you, by now?

I know that you were. You opened the door, to each website that you visited, and it is known. The fact that you are possibly unaware of the fact that it is known does not mean that you had privacy. It only means that you were unaware. Now you are not. You have two choices, Neo...

1) You can enter the electronic door, and be known... or never turn on a computer or a cell phone or a game system again, and pretend that you still have privacy. Or, 2) you can amend your behavior so that whatever is reflected in the data-gathering process doesn't reach up around and bite you in the ass, like the proverbial serpent...

Those are the apples... like them, or don't. Until something is legislated, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that. After all, inquiring minds want to know, don't they...?

:)

...what is this which is written in the Tanakh, `'The very rock which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?

The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet... - Proverbs 27:7 FELIX INFORTUNIUM...

RE: Serious discussion of Online Privacy
Assume you have no privacy when communicating over the Internet, telephone or via radio. If you need to have to discuss anything sensitive, do your best to obfuscate the information or use a code of sorts. There is no privacy unless you are face to face, and even then that can be compromised.

RE: Serious discussion of Online Privacy
Speaking of, has anyone else noticed getting script warnings after visiting LOP?

I sort of make it a habit to clear my history and cache before and after visiting LOP and I have noticed that about 30% of the time after visiting LOP that when I clear my history and cache that I get a warning that there's a problem with a script warning and whether I want to continue or stop the script. This has happened way more than once or twice- but it doesn't happen EVERY time.

Anyone else notice this? BTW, I'm aware that there's a noscript addon for firefox but I noticed with my firewall some undesirable behavior with it so I uninstalled it.

RE: Serious discussion of Online Privacy
While I believe that the OP has good intentions, it is a fail.
Now, how many of you have facebook accounts here?
Do you post the same name here as there. Not many do.
Why is that do you think? I know that we are tracked on here and there by who knows what.
But why make it even more simple to stalk people.
Op, Change your name to your real name here and I will agree with our conversation we had earlier.
Why should I have to change because you want to update??

Incorrect. The OP made this thread from a post from another place. I am on the same page.
