cow Smartphone manufacturers, carriers hit by alleged Surveillance Software
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- The controversy over alleged mobile surveillance software Carrier IQ got worse on Friday as two class action suits were filed against the software maker and smartphone manufacturers for violating a U.S. federal wiretapping statute.

According to reports by online media site PaidContent, the lawsuits, filed in Chicago and St. Louis, were brought on the basis of the U.S. Federal Wiretap Act, a law that forbids intercepting communications and provides penalties of 100 U.S. dollars per day for every violation that takes place.

The suits seek hundreds of million of dollars on behalf of all U.S. residents who had mobile phones containing the software, said the report.

In an interview with Forbes, Paul Ohm, a former U.S. Justice Department prosecutor and law professor at the University of Colorado Law School, said there is likely grounds for a class- action lawsuit based on the federal wiretapping law.

Carrier IQ drew media attention earlier this week when a YouTube video, released by a U.S. security researcher, revealed that the software, pre-installed on most modern Android, Blackberry and Nokia phones, is secretly capturing a user's phone experience from every keystroke, text messages to web browsing and search requests.

Interesting article! It contains very clear details about how to detect and remove Carrier IQ. In my opinion before removing, its important to know how it will really affect our cell phone service. CarrierIQ implements a service that can be valuable to help improve user experience in cellular networks. It is mainly for three purposes, to diagnose battery performance anxiety, dropped calls, and application failures.
