Some Christmas gifts from my mother in law includes,
A bottle of poison perfume
the game outburst
a 3x slip when I weighed 135 lbs (yes she wore a 3x)
a book on hypochondria and yes she is a hypochondriac.
a bottle of generic laundry soap because she hated the brand I swore by.
the list goes on.

I always bought her a beautiful candle.
Everyone would say have I was a bigger person for not getting her equally insulting gifts.

However on further reflection I sure it had something to do with me picturing her surround by flames in hell next to Satan.

No she liked them.

She was always trying to hurt me in someway but I learned early on that the only thing that really upset her was If what she did didn't bother me.

I remember how she would invite us for dinner and put me in the corner with a huge bouquet of flowers in front of me so no one could see me sitting there along with the fork with the bent prong that killed your lip.

Thankfully shes my ex mil now. My poor ex husband calls me every week with some new horror story about her, so glad I don't have to deal with her anymore.

My grandmother was the BEST in Christmas gifts! She gave all the grandchildren the same gifts every year, and we all dreaded what we would get.

She was very "crafty" and so we all got something she crafted up.

The worse one ever was the year she made all the girls fur muffs, but since I was living overseas on a tropical island I had no need for one, so I got a fur bikini! Tkemhdta

I can understand somewhat being "miffed" that your MIL regifted a gift card; but, this is truly where the phrase "it's the thought that counts". She did remember her granddaughter's birthday and did include a regifted gift card to a somewhat questionable place for a 10 year old.

Rather than dwell on the negative aspects, that is always SUPER duper easy, why not try to find the positives like the other posters have stated and enforce a positive outlook in your home?

You will never change your MIL, you can only change how you let her effect you. You and your wife, her daughter, state she is selfish, etc. Instead of focusing on that, be the better people and thank her for her thoughtfulness of sending ANYTHING to your daughter. Don't complain around your daughter that she got a grocery store gift card, find the positives that can come from it, think of fun ways to use it. BTW, I always did like Safeway, especially their produce section.

At least she got something.

I can't remember the last time my parents sent my son a card, a letter or a present. Been at least 15 years.

Nasty people. Best left outta my life. Best left outta my son's life. For that I am thankful.

So be thankful - for small things.
